The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team fell at home on Friday to the Abernathy Lady Lopes, 46-33, at Wildcat Gym.
With the loss, the Lady Cats fall to 0-3 overall on the season.
Senior, Geyah Garza, was called for a technical foul, with just over one minute gone in the first quarter, sending Chanie Chambers to the line for five throws. She converted both attempts at the line to put the Lady Lopes in front, 2-0.
On their next possession, Khaki Dubose was fouled on an attempt by junior, Ashtyn Parker; she split the fiee throws to extend their lead to, 3-0. The Abernathy run continued as Leah Villareal drove to the basket fora layup, to make it a, 5-0, scoring run for Abernathy.
With 5:07 remaining in the opening quarter, junior, Brookelyn Gau, was fouled on a put-back attempt by Mayra Martinez. She spathe attempts at the line to get the Lady Cats on the board. Freshman, Kyndal Edgemon, dropped in a put-back off of the miss by sophomore, Madison McNeese, to make it a one-possession game, 5-3.
Chanie Chambers dropped in arunner from the left side for Abernathy, but on the other end, Edgemon used a drop-step to get to the basket for a lay-up, trimming the lead to, 7-5, with 2:28 remaining in the first quartet
Villareal drained a three from the right elbow for Abernathy, but with time winding down in the quarter, Gau knocked down a short jumper in the lane andMcNeese drained athree from the left elbow to tie the game, 10-10, going into quarter number two.
Carlye Sandoval dropped in a floater in the lane, drawing an andone foul onEdgemon. She converted the free throw to give Abernathy a three-point lead, 13-10. Gau answered with a lay-up, as Abernathy took a time out with 6:55 to play in the first half Out of the break, junior, Emily Champion knocked down a jumper from the right wing off of the assist fiomMcNeese, giving Littlefield their first lead of the game, 14-13. Sandoval was fouledby Edgemon and split a one-in-one opportunity at the line to tie the game, 14-14.
Martinez was fouled on the floor by McNeese and made good on both ends of the one-in-one opportunity at the line to regain the lead for Abernathy, 16-14. Abernathy went four-for-six from the line over the next minutes to stretch their lead to, 20-14, with 3:38 remaining in the half.
With 1:28 to play in the second quarter, Villareal drained a three from the top of the key, pushing their lead out to, 23-14. On the other end, Edgemon was fouled on the floor by Avery Harris and split the free throws to trim the lead to, 23-15.
Leilani Solis converted apair of five throws to trim the lead to, 23-17, as the first half came to a close with Abernathy in front.
Dubose split a pair of free throws to open the second half and Chanie Chambers dropped in a lay-up to make it a nine-point game, 26-17. Chanie Chambers took a charge on McNeese on the defensive end, and the Lady Lopes cashed in on the turnover, as Martinez buried a corner three from the left side, extending their lead to, 29-17, with just under six minutes to play in the third quarter.
Charlee Chambers took a charge on Edgemon, as Littlefield called fora time out with 5:02 to play in the quartet Out of the break, Gau was fouled on an attempt by Charlee Chambers; she converted both attempts at the line to cut the lead to 10 points, 29-19.
Solis hit Gau with an inbound pass on their next possession, as she drew a shooting foul on Mikayla earning a trip to the line. She again converted both five throws, cutting the lead to eight points, 29-21, as the Lady Lopes called for a time out with 3:24 remaining in the quarter.
Out of the break, Gau was fouled again on a shot by Sandoval, she split the free throws, as the Lady Cats continued to chip away at the lead.
Martinez was fouled on the floor by Champion and in the bonus, she went to the line and sank both five throws to stretch the lead back out to nine points 31-22. With under one minute to play Solis was fouled on the floor by Dubose and drained both five throws to make it a seven-point game, 31-24.
With 1.4 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Solis knocked down a bucket for Littlefield, drawing an andone foul on Williams. She missed the free throw, sending them into the fourth quarter down just five points, 31-26.
Gau opened the final frame with a three from the left elbow, off of the assist fiom Champion to make it a onepossession game, 31-29. But, on the other end, Chanie Chambers was fouled on an attempt by Parker, who picked up her fourth foul ofthe game. She split the flee throws and Solis answered with a drive to the basket fora lay-up, to cut the Abernathy lead to one point, 32-31.
Dubosed dropped in a quick layup for Abernathy to make it a threepoint game and Sandoval split a pair office throws to make the score, 35-31, with 6:04 to play in the contest.
Abernathy would close out the fourth quarter on an, 11-2, scoring run to down the Lady Cats, 46-33.
Gau led the Lady Cats in scoring with 15 points, while Solis netted eight points and Edgemon contributed five points. McNeese added three points and Champion finished with two points.
The Lady Cats hosted Dalhart Tuesday. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Friday when they travel to Muleshoe for the district-opener against the Lady Mules.
