Lady Cats drop heartbreaker to Post in 5 sets

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity volleyball team had their first match on Saturday since having to go into quarantine for two weeks. They fell to the Post Lady Lopes in five sets, 2-3.

With the loss, the Lady Cats fall to 0-3 overall on the season.

In set one, Post jumped out to a, 0-7 lead, before a kill by junior, Ashtyn Parker was tipped out of bounds by Laci Gonzalez, getting the Lady Cats on the board, 1-7. A double hit on senior, Geyah Garza, sparked a three-point rally for the Lady Lopes, before a double hit was called on Aneliz Alaniz, turning the serve back over to Littlefield.

Hannah Ballejo had her serve returned out of bounds on a kill attempt by Briley Miller, trimming the lead to, 3-10. Sophomore, Madison McNeese, scored a kill off of the set by Garza to cut the lead to, 4-10, but Post would answer with a kill by Miller to regain the serve.

Sophomore, Kaeleigh Logan, hit a ball into the net for Littlefield and Camryn Cowley served up an ace off of McNeese, as Littlefield called a time out to talk things over, trailing Post, 4-13.

Out of the break, Ballejo and McNeese answered with back-toback kills for the Lady Cats followed with an ace from Parker to slice the lead to, 7-13. The rally ended, as Leah Moreno scored a kill that went out of bounds off of Parker, pushing the lead back out to, 7-14.

The Lady Cats responded, as McNeese pushed the ball to the back row dropping it just inside the back line for a kill. Brynna Ray served up an ace for the Lady Cats, and Gonzalez’s return off of the serve by Ray was short of the net making the score, 10-14.

Littlefield hit a ball into the net to end the rally, but they recovered quickly, as McNeese scored a kill to regain the serve for the Lady Cats. However, Post would close out the set on a, 10-0 scoring run to take set one, 11-25.

Post jumped out to a, 0-4, lead in set two, but a kill attempt sent into the net by, Jaylen Pittman, turned the serve over to the Lady Cats with the score, 1-4. The teams exchanged points before Alaniz was called for touching the net, making the score, 3-5.

A serve by junior, Emily Champion, was tipped out of bounds by Post, but her following serve sailed out of bounds, making it a two-point Post lead, 4-6. Moreno sent a hit into the net for Post and the Lady Cats tied it up on the next play, as Garza served up an ace that went out of bounds off of Post, making the score, 6-6.

Logan tipped the net for a kill, but Garza’s following serve was short of the net keeping the set tied, 7-7. Post was unable to capitalize, as they hit a ball out of bounds on the next play, giving the Lady Cats the lead, 8-7.

The exchange of points between the two teams continued until Ballejo was able to serve up back-to-back points for the Lady Cats, stretching their to, 14-10, as Post took a time out to talk things over. Out of the break, Garza scored a kill off of Miller, but Post answered with a kill in the back corner by Shayla Brown, making the score, 15-11.

Post took advantage of some Littlefield miscues, to make it a two-point set, 16-14, before a hit by Garza tipped the net and fell in for a kill for the Lady Cats, making the score, 17-14. Post came back to tie the set, 18-18, as Logan hit a ball out of bounds. The set went back and forth until Zapata served up an ace off of Miller to make the score, 21-20.

Junior, Danielle Zapata, closed out the set with five consecutive points to give Littlefield set two, 25-20, tying the match, 1-1.

In set three, Alaniz’s serve fell short of the net and the Lady Cats took advantage, going on a, 3-0 scoring run, before a hit by Garza sailed into the net, making the score, 4-1. Shamicha Wilson scored a kill off of Brown and Champion scored back-to-back points for the Lady Cats, before a set by Ray on the next play was too close to the net for Parker to play, making the score, 7-2, as the serve went back to Post.

Post would rally back and tie the set, 7-7, on an ace from Cowley, but her next serve was short of the net giving the lead and the serve back to Littlefield with the score, 8-7.

The back-and-forth scoring continued until a serve short of the net by Parker sparked a three-point rally for the Lady Lopes, making the score, 10-13. A kill by McNeese ended the run, but it was short-lived, as a hit by Logan sailed into the net, making the score, 11-15

Ȧ kill by Ellie Lopez landed out of bounds and a tip by Wilson landed outside the boundary, as the Lady Cats took a time out, trailing Post, 11-17. Out of the break Geyah hit a ball into the net, but Gonzalez’s serve was over the back line, making the score, 12-18.

Post would close out set three on a, 6-2 scoring run to take the set, 14-25, and go up, 1-2, in the match.

In set four, the Lady Cats got out to a, 6-2, lead after a kill from McNeese, but a double hit on Logan and a hit out of bounds by Ballejo, trimmed the score to, 6-4. Post was unable to capitalize, as Cowley’s serve was short of the net, and Garza followed it up with an ace off of Laci Gonzalez, before her next serve too was short of the net, making the score, 8-5.

The teams exchanged several points before a double hit on Pittman and a hit into the net by Brown gave the Lady Cats a three-point lead, 12-9. Cownley delievered a kill through the block attempt of Wilson and Samira Medina, but Alaniz’s next serve fell short of the net, making the score, 13-10.

Ray responded with an ace for Littlefield and a kill attempt by Garza was blocked by Cowley, but the ball landed out of bounds for a Littlefield point, making the score, 15-10. The teams exchanged several points before a tip by Garza sailed over Moreno and Pittman for a kill, extending their lead to, 18-13.

Garza served up an ace off of Miller, forcing the Lady Lopes to call a time out. Out of the break, McNeese delivered a kill through the block attempt of Moreno and Garza served up an ace past Laci Gonzalez, stretching their lead to, 21-13.

The teams went back and forth over the next several sequences, but the set ended when Parker delivered a kill to give the Lady Cats set four, 25-18, tying the set 2-2.

In the deciding set five, Post took over, taking the set, 5-15, to take the match, 2-3.

The Lady Cats were on the road on Tuesday to take on Idalou. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Saturday with a dual against Plains and Ropes.
