LADY CATS CAN’T GET STICKS GOING IN, 5-2, LOSS TO ABERNATHY

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity softball team dropped their first meeting with the Abernathy Lady Lopes on Saturday, 5-2, on the road.

With the loss, the Lady Cats fall to 3-4 overall, 0-2 in district play.

With two outs in the top of the first inning, senior, Nautica Espinoza, doubled to left field on an error, but the Lady Cats were unable to score her, as senior, Sydnie Miller, popped up to Sydnei Caro at first to retire the side.

Freshman, Cadence Sanchez got the start in the circle for Littlefield, but gave up a lead-off walk to Ireland Caro to begin the bottom half of the side. She got Novelei Martinez to pop up in front of home plate for out number one, but Chanie Chambers hit a shot to senior, Madison Diaz, at second base, that bounced off of her glove and rolled into left center field for a double, putting Abernathy up, 1-0.

Leah Villareal lined out to senior, Bailey Jones, in center field for out number two and Sydnei Caro flew out to Diaz in shallow right field to end the inning.

In the top of the second inning, after two quick outs from Sanchez and Jones, senior, Levi Hernandez singled to right field, but, again, the Lady Cats were unable to do anything with it, as Diaz popped up to Sydnei Caro at first to retire the side.

Jayden Olivas-Salas belted a triple over Jones in center field to lead off the bottom of the second inning, but Sanchez got Makenzie Martinez to strike out swinging for out number one. Samantha Pierson popped a floater into left field that fell between Espinoza and junior, Geyah Garza, for an RBI double, putting Abernathy up, 1-0.

Pierson took third on a ball in the dirt to Taelor Liess, before Liess was thrown out at first by freshman catcher, Kaeleigh Logan, on a dropped third strike. Pierson scored on the play, putting them up, 2-0.

Littlefield Head Coach, Keith Logan, made a substitution, as sophomore, Brookelyn Gau entered the circle and Miller entered the game for Logan behind the plate.

Ireland Caro doubled over Espinoza in left field and Novelei Martinez hit a ball into right field for an RBI triple on a throwing error by freshman, Madison McNeese, making the score, 3-0. Chambers hit an RBI single through the right side past a diving attempt by Diaz at second base to extend their lead to, 4-0. Chambers was picked offby Miller trying to steal second to end the inning.

Neither team was able to get anything going in the third inning, but in the top of the fourth inning, Miller was hit by a pitch to give the Lady Cats abase runner to lead things off. Sanchez laid down a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by Ireland Caro and thrown to first for out number one, as Miller moved up 90-feet.

Jones drew a walk, as Miller took third on the play, and she took second on a pitch to Hernandez, before Hernandez ripped a twoRBI double off of the left center field fence to cut the lead in half, 4-2. Diaz singled on an error by the pitcher, but Gau flew out to Liess in right field and Garza lined out to Sydnei Caro at first to retire the side.

Gau made quick work of the Lady Lopes in the bottom of the fourth as she got Pierson and Liess to each strike out swinging for two outs. Ireland Caro drew a walk, but Novelei Martinez slapped a ball at Gau in the circle and was thrown out at first to end the inning.

Abernathy added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Leah Villareal hit an RBI single to Sanchez at first away from the bag. She made the diving stop, but was unable to recover, as Abernathy stretched their lead to, 5-2. Gau would retire the next three batters, but the Lady Cats were unable to overcome the three-run lead, falling to the Lady Lopes in district play, 5-2.

Sanchez finished with one and 2/3 innings of work giving up two runs and one walk, while earning two strikeouts. Gau pitched four and 1/3 innings, earning six strikeouts, while giving up three runs and one walk.
