Hornets win homecoming game over plains, 56-12

The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team pushed their winning streak to four games on Friday, as they took down the Plains Cowboys, 56-12, to celebrate Homecoming with a victory.

With the win, the Hornets improve to 4-1 overall on the season heading into the bye week.

The Hornets out-gained Plains, 558 total yards to 184 yards, including 439 rushing yards and 149 passing yards.

The Hornets struck first in the first quarter, as senior, Josue Cervera, broke free for a 54-yard touchdown run that was followed with the two-point conversion run by sophomore, Marcello King, to put the Hornets in front, 8-0. Plains answered with a 30-yard touchdown pass, but missed on the twopoint conversion to make the score, 8-6, in favor of the Hornets heading into quarter number two.

King opened the second quarter with a seven-yard rushing touchdown, leaving the score, 146, after the failed two-point conversion. Cervera would punch in a five-yard score, followed by a two-point conversion run from junior quarterback, Trent Wilson, to stretch their lead to, 22-6.

Sudan would strike again, as Wilson, this time, broke loose on a 75-yard touchdown run. The Hornets missed on the two-point conversion, making the score, 286. Later in the second quarter, Truett Kerby would catch a 21yard touchdown pass from Wilson and Cervera scored on the two-point conversion to extend their lead to, 36-6. King would close out the first half with a 41yard touchdown run to stretch their lead to, 42-6, going into the locker room at halftime.

Plains would respond in the third quarter, rushing for a twoyard touchdown, but again the missed on the conversion, leaving the score, 42-12. Sudan wasted no time finding an answer, as Wilson connected with Alan Flores on a 45-yard touchdown strike, making the score, 49-12, after the PAT by Wilson to end the third quarter.

Sudan would add one final score in the fourth quarter, on a 19-yard touchdown run from Matthew Lopez, as they went on to win their Homecoming game over Plains, 5612.

Wilson finished the game eightof- 12 passing for 149 yards and two touchdowns, while also adding 12 carries for 162 yards and a touchdown. Cervera chipped in 151 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, while King tallied eight carries for 67 yards and two scores, and Joel Williams added three carries for 40 yards. Lopes also contributed one carry for 19 yards and a score.

Flores led the receiving game with four catches for 70 yards and one touchdown, while Sal Juarez added two catches for 41 yards. Kerby hauled in one catch for 21 yards and a score and King caught one ball for 17 yards.

Defensively, Cervera and Carr led the way for the Hornets with 7 total tackles apiece, while Abel Armendariz added four total tackles and a sack. Julian Salas finished with three tackles and a fumble recovery, while Flores added two tackles and two fumble recoveries.

The Hornets are open this week, and will open district play next Friday, Oct. 7th, at home against Hale Center.

Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
