Hornets sting Tahoka, 36-12

The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team picked up their first win of the season on Friday, as they defeated the Tahoka Bulldogs on the road, 36-12.

With the win, the Hornets improve to 1-1 overall on the season.

The Hornets totaled 271 yards of offense; 153 rushing yards and 118 passing yards.

After a scoreless first quarter, Sudan got their offense rolling, as junior quarterback, Trent Wilson, connected with Kaleb Robinson on a six- yard pass for a touchdown. The Hornets missed on a two-point conversion leaving the score, 6-0.

Later in the second quarter, Alan Flores caught a 26- yard touchdown pass from Wilson to extend the Sudan lead to, 12- 0, after a missed two- point conversion. The Hornets would close out the first half when Wilson hit Sal Juarez for a 68- yard touchdown pass to make the score, 18- 0, going into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, the defense got in on the scoring as Jaden Conley picked up a fumble and took it 60 yard to the house for the scoop and score, stretching their lead to, 24-0. Later in the third quarter, Wilson would scoop up a fumble and take it the distance, returning it 92 yards for a touchdown, extending their lead to, 30-0.

Tahoka would strike back, though, as Zane Garvin, broke free for a 37- yard touchdown run to trim the lead to, 30- 6. However, Sudan would close out the third quarter with a 28-yard touchdown run from Marcello King to push their lead back out to, 36- 6.

In the fourth quarter, Brogan Stone scored on a seven- yard touchdown run for the Bulldogs, but the Hornets took the

contest, 36-12. Wilson finished the game nine- or- 13 passing for 118 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, while also adding 17 yards on the ground.

In the rushing game, Josh Cevera finished with eight carries for 75 yards, while King tallied eight carries for 61 yards and one touchdown.

Juarez led the receiving attack with one catch for 68 yards and one touchdown, while Flores tallied three catches for 26 yards and one touchdown, and Tony Vargas finished with two catches for 11 yards. Truett Kerby added two catches for seven yards and Kaleb Robinson tallied one catch for six yards and one touchdown.

Defensively, the Hornets forced five turnovers and had two defensive touchdowns. Drew Carr led the team in total tackles with 14, including one for loss. Matthew Lopez had 13 total tackles, including four for loss, while Conley finished with nine tackles, one sack, one fumble recovery and a touchdown.

Cevera finished with 11 tackles, one interception and a fumble recovery, while King tallied five tackles and pulled down an interception.

The Hornets will be at home to take on Ropes on Friday night.

Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
