The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team shutout the Crosbyton Chieftains on Friday, 42-0, to improve to 7-1 overall on the season.

With the win, the Hornets improve to 3-0 in district play.

The Hornets totaled 418 yards of offense, including 298 rushing yards and 120 passing yards, while holding Crosbyton to 135 yards of total offense.

Junior quarterback, Trent Wilson, got the Hornets going in the first quarter with a six-yard touchdown run, but the two-point conversion try was no good, leaving the score, 6-0. The score stood heading into halftime.

In the third quarter, though, Josue Cervera sparked the Hornet offense with a 19-yard rushing touchdown. Wilson followed it up with a run for the two-point conversion to push their lead to 14-0. Later in the third quarter, Wilson rushed for a four-yard touchdown and the PAT by Caleb Groetken was good, extending their lead to, 21-0.

Wilson closed out the third quarter with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Thys Danzeisen, which was followed with the PAT by Groetken, stretching their lead to, 28-0, heading into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth quarter, Cervera rushed for a three yard touchdown and Matthew Lopez scored on a 16-yard run to make the score, 420, after the pair of made PAT’s by Groetken, as the Hornets took down Crowbyton.

Wilson finished the game 10-15 passing for 120 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while also adding 18 carries for 72 yards and two touchdowns.

Cervera led the rushing attack with 16 carries for 109 yards and two touchdowns, while Marcello King chipped in eight carries for 46 yards, while Matthew Lopez tallied one carry for 16 yards and a touchdown and Drayven Nash contributed one carry for 33 yards.

In the receiving game, Danzeisen caught two passes for 28 yards and one touchdown, while Sal Juarez caught three balls for 43 yards and Alan Flores chipped in two catches for 31 yards.

Defensively, King hauled in an interception, while Jaden Conley and Drew Carr led the team in tackles with 11 a piece, combining for nine tackles for loss. Jeremiah Castillo finished with five total tackles, including three for loss.

The Hornets will host Bovina on Friday for senior night.

Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
