Hornets grind out win over Bovina, 25-22

The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team scored a late touchdown in the fourth quarter to pull ahead of the Bovina Mustangs on Friday night, taking the contest, 25-23, to stay unbeaten in district play.

With the win, the Hornets improve to 8-1 overall, 4-0 in district play.

Sudan totaled 372 yards of offense, including 225 passing yards and 147 rushing yards.

Bovina got the scoring going in the first quarter with a 63-yard fumble return for a touchdown, that was followed with the PAT to put them in front, 7-0. Later in the first quarter, Sal Juarez hauled in a 53-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback, Trent Wilson, but they missed on the two-point conversion, leaving Bovina in front, 7-6.

In the second frame, Josue Cervera scored on a five-yard run, but the Hornets again missed on the two-point conversion, as they took the lead, 12-7. Bovina recorded a safety later in the second quarter, making the score, 129, going into the locker room at halftime.

The Mustangs opened the second half with a three-yard touchdown run, but they missed the PAT, putting them back in front, 15-12. Wilson answered with a four-yard touchdown run, and the PAT by Caleb Groetken was good, putting Sudan back in front, 1915, heading into the final quarter of play.

In the final frame, Bovina scored on a one-yard touchdown run and converted the two-point conversion to take the lead, 23-19. However, later in the fourth quarter, Juarez caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Groetken to put the Hornets up, 25-23, after the failed two-point conversion try. The score would stand, as Sudan held on for the victory over Bovina, 25-23.

Wilson finished the game 12-19 passing for 200 yards and one touchdown, while Groetken was one-of-two for 25 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Cervera led the rushing attack with 16 carries for 91 yards and one touchdown, while Wilson tallied 17 carries for 56 yards and a score. Marcello King also had six carries for 21 yards.

In the receiving game, Juarez hauled in five passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns, while Alan Flores tallied three catches for 65 yards and a score. King chipped in one catch for 23 yards and Kaleb Robinson tallied one catch for 21 yards.

Defensively, Juarez hauled in an interception, while Cervera and Matthew Lopez each led the team in tackles with 10. Cervera tallied two tackles for loss, while Lopez had three for loss and one sack. Wilson added nine tackles, three for loss, and Jeremiah Castillo tallied eight tackles, five for loss and one sack.

Drew Carr contributed eight tackles, two for loss and Jaden Conley finished with seven tackles, including one for loss.

The Hornets will close out the season on Friday with a road game against the Ralls Jackrabbits.

Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
