The Sudan Hornet’s varsity football team kicked off district with a win on Friday, as they took down the Hale Center Owls, 26-6, at the Hornet’s Nest.

With the win, the Hornet’s improve to 5-1 overall, 1-0 in district play.

The Hornets totaled 393 yards of offense, including 297 rushing yards and 96 passing yards, while holding Hale Center to just 134 total yards.

After a scoreless first quarter, Jeremiah Castillo opened the second frame with a safety for the Hornet’s defense, putting them in front, 2-0. The Hornet’s offense would get on the board, as Trent Wilson connected with Kaleb Robinson for a 23- yard touchdown pass. Wilson’s kick was no good, leaving the score, 8-0.

The Owls would answer with a five-yard rushing touchdown, but missed on the two-point conversion, leaving Sudan in front, 8-6. The Hornets would strike again before halftime, as Josue Cervera broke loose for a 65-yard rushing touchdown to make the score, 146, after the failed PAT. The score stood going into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, Wilson rushed for a one yard touchdown in the third quarter and a threeyard touchdown in the fourth quarter, as the Hornets shut out the Owls in the second half, taking the contest, 26-6.

Wilson finished the game nineof- 15 passing for 96 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also added 30 carries for 164 yards and two touchdowns.

Cervera added 19 carries for 111 yards and one touchdown and Marcello King tallied eight carries for 23 yards.

In the receiving game, Alan Flores tallied four catches for 28 yards, while Sal Juarez, grabbed one ball for 27 yards and Robinson contributed one catch for 23 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Cervera and Juarez each hauled in an interception, while Castillo recorded a safety and they also had a fumble recovery.

Drew Carr led the team with 10 total tackles, while Castillo chipped in six tackles, including three for loss and two sacks, and Jaden Conley contributed eight tackles, including one for loss and sack. Cervera added six tackles, while Matthew Lopez finished with seven total tackles.

The Hornets will be at Lockney on Friday to take on the Longhorns at 7 p.m.
