“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

Hebrews 10:24-25 Do you ever feel overwhelmed? Do you ever feel like it’s you against the whole world, and the world is getting the best of you? Unfortunately, that feeling happens to many of us if not all of us at times. So, what do we do about it? I have a cowboy friend who always quotes his uncle, he would always say “Keep Spurrin!” Keep spurrin! That’s what I want to share with you today! Well, the next thing you may ask is what exactly does that mean? To a cowboy it means to keep riding no matter what! A gentle spur in the right place of a good horse will get the perfect response. If a cowboy gets bucked off, he gets right back on, and,,,Keeps Spurrin! If that analogy doesn’t work for you, how about a famous quote from Winston Churchill who said this during World War II: “Never give up, never give up, never give up!”

So how do I Keep Spurrin when I just feel like I can’t go another step, I can’t get back on the horse, I want to give up? Well, I’m glad you asked! I always point people to the risen Lord Jesus Christ as the answer for every battle we have in our lives. He is the ultimate strength and through Him we can do all things! That is the truth! But sometimes, Jesus seems so very far away. That is why Jesus built his Church. The church is where we can find Jesus with skin on. In other words people who have the Spirit of God living within them so that together you can get through those times that seem impossible!

In today’s culture more and more people are not looking to the church for the answer to their feelings of being overwhelmed. Instead they are trying to gut it up themselves, or they are taking some substance or drinking, or you name it, along with just simply giving up. I urge you not to give up, but to Keep Spurrin! Find you a church that you can plug into so that the people around you can spur you on when you are down, and likewise you can be there for them when they feel overwhelmed. Now, I know some of you may say well, the church is full of hypocrites that’s why I won’t do that. My answer is no, the church is not full of hypocrites, the church is people that are just like anyone else, we make mistakes, but we confess those mistakes and seek to be transformed by the Spirit of God!

I know of many wonderful people in this community that you can lean into and feel Jesus in your time of troubles, and they belong to some awesome churches. You can find them at St. John’s Baptist, New Jerusalem Baptist, Peace Deliverance, Trinity, Amherst Baptist, First Baptist, and you are always welcome to come and see us at Littlefield Methodist Church. These are just some of the places you can go and begin to realize that God has never left you nor will he forsake you! The writer of Hebrews encouraged his readers “not to give up meeting together as some are in the habit of doing” because he knew just how desperately we as human beings need each other. How about this idea: Try going to a church this Sunday. I believe you will experience the risen Lord Jesus waiting to pick you up. O, and one more thing: Keep Spurrin!!

Have a Blessed Week!
