Fair Weather Fans?
I’m all for this weather change. I enjoy the cooler days — I can take my evening walk a little earlier. And the rain has been such a blessing.
But changing weather brings challenges. Events get canceled due to storms. Fewer people show up for football games when it gets cold. And when it rains, we always have fewer people in church.
My point is, Jesus has a lot of fairweather followers today. They’re Christians when it’s convenient, when it’s easy, or when it’s popular. But the moment hardship hits, the moment persecution rears its head, they retreat.
They abandon their faith and prove themselves to be less than true disciples.
That would certainly explain why the church has not been turning the world upside down. And why, far too often, the world is turning the church upside down.
We need to get back to Christianity as it’s given to us in the Bible — as Jesus proclaimed it and the early church lived it. Not the watered-down version of today, but authentic, New Testament Christianity. In short, we need to become committed disciples of Jesus.
So let me ask you: Are you a disciple of Jesus Christ?
Jesus calls us to step out from the multitude, from the fair-weather followers, to be His true disciples. And He never asks more from us than we can give. He will reward our genuine discipleship and guide us every step of the way.
May we be faithful and committed, no matter the storms that come our way.
Love you all, Pastor Tanner
