Twila Sue Sawyer, 83, of Earth, died Tuesday, February 7, 2023, in Lubbock, Texas. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, February 10, 2023, at the First Baptist Church in Earth with Brother Jackie Gestes officiating. Interment followed at Earth Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Ramage Funeral Directors.
Twila was born September 24, 1939, at her home, near Plainview, Texas, to Earl and Gladys (Ellis) Hampton. She grew up in the Cone and Littlefield communities before moving to Earth in 1960. On June 17, 1960, Twila married Darrell Sawyer, in Littlefield. An active and dedicated member of the First Baptist Church, Twila was also a member of We the Women group in Earth. She was a hard worker who helped on the farm, driving a truck or the tractor before becoming the secretary at Southwestern Public Service for many years. In 1993, Twila became one of the original partners who converted an old run-down building in Olton into the Wild Plum Bed and Breakfast. Twila had a true servant's heart who was known to help out in any way needed in the community. She preferred the outdoors and could often be found working in her garden or flower beds. Twila also enjoyed quilting and was a talented oil painter.
Twila was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Darrell Sawyer in 2015; her brother, Travis Hampton; and a nephew, Travis Hampton, Jr.
Survivors include her son, Cary Don Sawyer and his wife, Monica of Lubbock; her sister, Carolyn Watts of Dimmitt; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was blessed with two grandchildren, Ryan Brown and his wife, Brooke and Justin Brown and his wife, Stefanie; and six great-grandchildren: Brady, Cooper, Boston, Berkley, Preslee, and Ryder.
