In Loving Memory Of
Oct. 21, 1943 ~ Oct. 4, 2023
Shirley Marie Bullard Buchanan was born October 21, 1943, in Winters, TX to the parents of John Duncan (J.D.) and Nina (Dudley) Bullard. Shirley passed away from her earthly life into the arms of her Lord on the morning of October 4, 2023 in Lubbock, TX.
Her family moved to Anton, TX shortly after her birth. Shirley attended all 12 years of school at Anton ISD, where she met and fell in love with the love of her life, Charles Buchanan.
Shirley and Charles were married on June 8th, 1963, in Anton, TX. They were active in farming from the beginning of their marriage in 1963 to just last year in 2022. Shirley was the owner, operator, head cook and boss of Shirley B's Country Cookin' restaurant in Anton. She opened her restaurant in the Fall of 1989 and remained open until her retirement in April of 2005.
Shirley enjoyed helping the love of her life Charles on the family farm, attending all her children's activities, and raising her family in the Lawrence Avenue Church of Christ in Anton, TX. Shirley was only four years old when her mother passed away. She was taught how to cook by her older brothers Fred, and Truman, and her older sister Wanda. She was around ten years old when she began cooking on her own, standing on a milk crate to reach the stove top. This started a lifelong debate among her siblings on who was the best cook and especially who could make the best pot of red beans. Shirley always considered her gift of cooking to be a tool and talent that God gave her to be a servant of His. She used this gift to meet, reach, and develop many lifelong friendships.
Although Shirley, Shirley B., Mom, Mama, Nana, Ree, Aunt Ree, Aunt Marie will be so dearly missed, our loss is a triumph for her because she is walking, talking with her Lord and Savior. She has also been reunited with her family and friends that have gone on before her. Shirley was proceeded in death by her father, J.D.; her mother, Nina; brothers, George, Norman, Fred, Ray, Truman and Roy Bullard; and one sister, Rita Mae King.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Buchanan; a son, Ronnie (Tonya) Buchanan; two daughters, Shollie (Larry) Wood and Kim Buchanan, all of Anton; eight grandchildren, Tyler & Kristie Buchanan, Trey and Heather Buchanan, Erik and Macy Buchanan, Emily and Greg Stout, Canan and Brylie Wood, Jace Wood, Shaun and Jordan Fontenot, Tanner and Alexis Stover; fifteen great grandchildren; and a sister, Wanda Fails of Soper, Oklahoma.
Celebration of Life Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 9, 2023 at Lawrence Avenue Church of Christ in Anton. Interment will follow in Anton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Anton Cemetery Association (PO Box 413, Anton, TX 79313).
