Oscar Leon Barnes
Oscar Leon Barnes, 91, of Anton, TX, died peacefully on Dec. 2, 2018 at Ussery-Roan Texas State Veterans Home, Amarillo. Graveside services were held Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 5, 2018 at Anton Cemetery. Ar- rangements were under the per- sonal care of Hammons Funeral Home, Littlefield, TX. Leon was born Aug. 15, 1927 in Marietta, TX to O.T. and Nannie Jane Barnes. Leon worked as a road grader for Hockley County and a gin- ner at the cotton gin in Anton. He served in the Army during World II in the 8th Army Occupational Forces of Japan (Yokohama). He was a PFC and a General Clerk, earning the WWII Victory Medal Army of Occupation. Leon was known to his nieces and nephews as Uncle Sonny. He devoted his life to lovingly caring for his mother after the death of his father. He enjoyed his cars, playing dominoes and reading about different aircraft, especially military aircraft. Leon was predeceased by his parents, O.T. and Nannie Janes Barnes; his brother, Lindy Barnes; two sisters, Lorene Blair and Nellie Whitson; and a nephew, David Barnes. He is survived by his brother-in-law, Randy Whitson; nieces, Karen Whitson Brantley and husband, Royal, Leesa Barnes McCasland and husband, Dan; nephews Curtis Blair and wife, Marsha, Bobby Blair and wife, Vicki and Larry Whitson and wife, Kerry. Uncle Sonny is also survived by numerous great and great- great nieces and nephews.
