Mary Lu Measles Grant

Jan. 7, 1934 ~ Oct. 29, 2022

Mary Lu Measles Grant, age 88, went to her forever home with Jesus on October 29, 2022. She leaves behind her family and a multitude of friends who cherished her deeply.

Mary Lu was born on January 7, 1934, in Olton, Texas to JG and Mary Measles. She attended Olton schools and graduated in 1951. Following graduation, she moved to Littlefield, TX, where she met and married the love of her life, Billy Tom Grant, in October of 1953. To this union, Shelly, Sharla, and Shalyn were born.

When her youngest began school, Mary Lu and a couple of her friends decided to pursue a college degree. She attended South Plains College and graduated with a bachelor's degree in education from Texas Tech University.

Mary Lu taught in Littlefield Schools for 30 years. Her subject matter was math, sprinkled abundantly with love, hard work, encouragement and a healthy dose of discipline.

After retirement, she was Billy Tom's faithful caregiver for almost 20 years at which time they made the transition to Raider Ranch in Lubbock.

Mary Lu loved the Lord and her church. She was a member of the Littlefield First United Methodist congregation where she served as the Good Fellowship Sunday School teacher, a Bethel Bible Study teacher, a trustee on two additions to the church building, and on various other committees. She was active in the Llano Estacado Emmaus Community for many years.

An avid sports fan, Mary Lu loved watching the Texas Tech Red Raiders, Dallas Cowboys, and Texas Rangers. But the team that held a special place in her heart was the Littlefield Wildcats.

Mary Lu is survived by her two daughters, Shelly Morris (Mike) of Littlefield and Sharla Schaffner (Dale) of Lubbock, as well as her son-in-law Lynn Cowan (Linda) of Lubbock. She was "Nanny" to seven beloved grandchildren: Jordan, Ryan and Kirk Hackler, Casey, Candice, and Cara Cowan, and Kaitlyn Schaffner Alexander along with 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Bob Measles, of Magnolia.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Billy Tom, and her daughter Shalyn Grant Cowan. Also awaiting her in heaven were her parents, two sisters (Tia Juana and Wilma) and a brother (James). What a glorious reunion that must have been!!

Mary Lu's compassion and love for her friends and family sent ripples out into her community of Littlefield and beyond. She was always reaching out to others with a helping hand and a listening ear. Her faith in Jesus was the foundation of her life.

A special thanks goes to the staff of The Isle at Raider Ranch in Lubbock and her caring doctor Kelly Klein.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, November 5, at the Littlefield United Methodist Church at 2:00 pm. All are invited to a reception following in the Fellowship Hall of the church. Burial will be in Littlefield Memorial Park prior to the celebration in a private family gathering. A visitation will be held at Hillcrest Funeral Home for friends and family from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 4, 2022.

Memorials to the Littlefield Methodist Church where she served so faithfully will be gratefully accepted.
