Ethel Tweedy Maurer, a resident of Littlefield for 76 years, died at home on August 26, 2022, surrounded by members of her family. She was 98 and had been in declining health since the beginning of the summer.

Mrs. Maurer was born Ethel Virginia Tweedy on November 30, 1923, in Campbell County, Virginia, where her Scots-Irish ancestors had farmed since the 1700s. A graduate of Concord High School, she moved to nearby Lynchburg in 1941 to work as a secretary. There, she met her future husband, Dr. Ralph Elmer Maurer. Married the following year, the couple resided briefly in the Charleston, South Carolina area, until Dr. Maurer, an officer in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, was shipped overseas to North Africa and then Italy during World War II.

After the war, the couple and their young son settled in Littlefield, where Dr. Maurer served as a physician and general surgeon for nearly half a century. Mrs. Maurer had four more children. She was active in the community and a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church.

An avid reader, Mrs. Maurer subscribed to multiple newspapers, many magazines, and lived in a house full of books. She and her close friends were longtime attendees of Texas Tech Museum's annual Arts History Lecture Series.

Mrs. Maurer is survived by her son, Robert of Richardson; her son, Richard and daughter-in-law, Susan Marsh of Holden, Mass.; her daughter, Virginia of Cambridge, Mass.; and her daughter-inlaw, Virginia G. Maurer of Gainesville, Fla. In addition, she has six grandsons, three great-grandsons, and two great-granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by four siblings; her husband; her son, Ralph Gerald; and her daughter, Rachel.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Littlefield.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Mrs. Maurer's memory to the First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 448, Littlefield, TX 79339; or to the Grief Center of New Mexico, 4125 Carlisle Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87107 (https://griefnm.org/donate/).
