Don was born June 10, 1937 in Shelbyville, Indiana. He grew up in Anderson, Indiana, and had many childhood adventures with his brothers and sisters. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the United States Airforce. He was stationed in RAF Station, Bentwaters, Suffolk, England, and several other bases in the U.S. His favorite station was Eielson AFB in Fairbanks Alaska. He often told stories of taking his sons out in the wilderness to fish. One fishing trip was cut short when Don spotted fresh grizzly bear tracks nearby. He also loved telling the story of being flown to Ft Yukon by an adventurous Airforce pilot who enjoyed chasing moose with his airplane. Don was also stationed at Reese AFB in Lubbock, where he attained the rank of Master Sergent, and worked in civil service after separating from the Airforce. Don was one of the last personnel to leave Reese AFB when it closed in the late 90’s. Don enjoyed staying active with bowling, fishing, golfing, hunting, and softball. He played on a senior slow pitch team in his 70’s. He also boxed in his later years, trying to stay active as his Parkinsons and Dementia was advancing. Don loved to travel, he and Jackie took many trips in their 5th wheel. Don especially enjoyed going to the Shirley Family Reunion in Indiana. Don was proud of his family and tried to set a Godly example to all who knew him. He enjoyed going to school events and ball games played by his grandkids. He enjoyed time with his great grandkids. He was a faithful member at Raintree Christian church, and later at Greenlawn Church of Christ.
