Fire crews battle blaze at Tolk Station

Wes Reeves, Media Relations for Xcel Energy said Monday around 5:30 p.m., a power transformer on one of the two generating units at Tolk Station caught fire, creating a large plume of black smoke that could be seen for miles around. Reeves said no one was injured, and the fire was contained to the transformer itself.

The rest of the plant was not damaged, at least on first inspection, and there were no associated power outages. The transformer is a key component of the generating system, and it takes the power from the generator and increases its voltage so it can be sent out on the transmission network. Xcel Energy officials identified a fault that triggered the fire, but don’t have enough information at this point to say what caused the fault.
