The Olton Mustangs’ varsity basketball team used a second half surge to take down the Littlefield Wildcats at Mustang Gym on Monday, 76-54.

With the win, the Mustangs improve to 15-2, while the Wildcats fall to 3-10 overall on the season.

Olton’s Brennon Huguley opened the contest with a lay-up, and Joe Canchola followed it up with a put-back off of a miss by Andrew Martinez to put the Mustangs in front, 4-0. Jake Soliz buried a three from the right elbow, off of the assist from Huguley, but Littlefield’s Ryan West ended the scoring drought for the Wildcats with a put-back off of a miss by Jeremiah Trevino, trimming the lead to, 7-2, with 4:25 left to play in the first quarter.

Soliz answered for Olton with a three from the top of the key off of the assist from Huguley, but Littlefield’s Jaron Cabello came right back with a three of his own from the left wing, off of the assist from Jeremiah Trevino, making the score, 10-5, with 3:50 remaining in the opening quarter.

West dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Jeremiah Trevino and Omar Martinez followed it up with a jumper from the left wing to make it a one-point Olton lead, 10- 9.

Olton took a time out with 2:08 to play in the first quarter and out of the break, Nick Casares drained a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Solis, but the Wildcats had the answer, as Jordan Trevino knocked down a three on the other end, off of the assist from West, trimming the lead to, 13-12, with one minute to play in the quarter

Ḣuguley dropped in a lay-up and Solis followed it up with a three from the left wing off of an assist from Chris Urbina, but at the buzzer Jeremiah Trevino dropped in a bucket to trim the lead to, 18- 14, as the first quarter came to a close.

Casares was fouled on an attempt in transition by MJ Randle. He missed both free throws, but Chris Urbina got the offensive rebound, which led to a pair of free throws, after he was fouled on an attempt by Jordan Trevino. He split the attempts at the line, pushing their lead to, 19-14, with 7:13 remaining in the half.

With just under seven minutes to play in the half, Tyrell Norman dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Martinez and followed it up with a drive and dump in the lane to Ty’Jae Chambers, who finished the play with a lay-up, making it a one-point Olton lead, 19- 18

Ẇith 5:20 remaining in the half, Norman drove the lane for a layup, giving Littlefield their first lead of the game, 20-19. However, Olton quickly answered, as Martinez drained a three from the left wing off of the assist from Canchola, making the score, 22-20. The lead was short-lived, as Martinez dropped in a lay-up in transition to tie the game, 22-22.

Chris Urbina knocked down a bucket for the Mustangs, but on the other end, Chambers was fouled on a put-back attempt by Chris Urbina. He made one-of-two shots at the line to cut the Olton lead to one point, 24-23. With 3:09 left to play in the first half, Martinez hit Norman for a lay-up in transition, as Littlefield regained the lead, but on the other end, Alex Santillan was fouled on an attempt by Martinez; he sank both free throws to put Olton up by one point, 26-25.

But, the Wildcats wasted no time getting back to work on offense, as Martinez hit Major McNeese on a cut to the basket for a lay-up, putting them back in front, 27-26, with 2:21 remaining in the half. Chambers scored a put-back to make it a three-point Littlefield lead, but Solis was fouled on a two-on-one break by Martinez. He sank both free throws to cut the lead to one-point and on the next play, Santillan took a charge on Ian Mendez to regain possession for Olton. In the closing seconds of the half, Santillan drained a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Solis to give the Mustangs a, 31-29, lead going into the locker room at halftime.

Huguley took a charge on Cabello to open the second half, and after the turnover, He backed down the Littlefield defense using a spin move to get to the basket for a lay-up, stretching their lead to, 33-29, with 6:31 remaining in the third quarter. Santillan scored a put-back off of a miss by Huguley and Littlefield took a time out with 5:42 remaining in the quarter to prevent a turnover. Out of the break, Chris Urbina dropped in a lay-up on the fast-break, drawing an and-one foul on Martinez. He missed the free throw, but it went out of bounds off of Norman, with the Olton lead pushed to, 37- 29.

Chris Urbina drove the left baseline and found Huguley for a lay-up, but Norman answered on the other end with a lay-up of his own for the Wildcats to mae the score, 39-31. Andrew Martinez buried a three from the left elbow for Olton to stretch their leda to double-digits, 42-31, but it was quickly cut back to nine points, as Ethan Garcia scored a put-back off of a miss, making the score, 42-33.

With just over three minutes remaining in the quarter, Santillan dropped in a lay-up for Olton, but Norman, on the other end, found Chambers for a lay-up to make the score, 44-35. With 2:38 remaining in the quarter, Chris Urbina sank a three from the top of the key, off of the assist from Canchola, but Norman quickly answered with a lay-up off of the inbound pass from Jordan Trevino, cutting the lead to 10 points, 47-37.

Norman got out on the break, driving the lane and dishing it off to Jordan Trevino for a lay-up, cutting the lead to, 47-39, with 2:10 left to play in the quarter. Santillan answered on the other end with a drive and kick to Canchola for a lay-up, pushing their lead back out to, 49-39.

Chris Urbina drained a three from the right wing, but with under one minute to play in the quarter, Chambers dropped in a bucket, drawing an and-one foul on Canchola. He missed the free throw, leaving the score, 52-41, heading into the final quarter of play.

Solis opened the fourth quarter with a pull-up jumper from the right elbow, but Jeremiah Trevino answered with a floater on the left side to make the score, 54-43. Huguley was fouled on a put-back attempt by Cabello and split the free throws, but Cabello answered on the other end with a three from the left elbow, trimming the lead to, 55-46, with 6:50 left to play in the game.

Huguley dropped in a babyhook in the lane off of the assist from Chris Urbina, but Chambers answered with a put-back off of a miss by Jordan Trevino to make the score, 57-48. Chris Urbina would bury a dagger three from the left elbow off of the assist from Andrew Martinez, however, Chambers again answered with a lay-up for Littlefield, trimming the lead to, 60-50.

With 5:21 left to play in the game, Santillan was fouled on the floor by Jordan Trevino, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line. He split the free throws to make the score, 61-50. Chris Urbina dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Soliz and Andrew Martinez followed it up with a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Soliz, making the score, 66-50, as Littlefield took a time out with 4:35 remaining in the game.

Out of the break, Soliz knocked down a runner in the lane and Casares followed it up with a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Chris Urbina, extending their lead to, 71-50, with 1:52 left to play in the game.

Jordan Trevino knocked down a three from the right elbow to end the scoring drought for Littlefield, but Jimmy Munoz answered with a three from the right wing to make the score, 74-53. With under one minute remaining, Canchola picked up a steal and took it the other way for a fast-break lay-up and on the other end, McNeese was fouled on an attempt by Casares. He split the attempts, as Littlefield fell on the road to Olton, 76-54.

The Wildcats were led in scoring by Chambers, who finished with 13 points and Norman, who tallied 10 points. Jordan Trevino contributed eight points, while Cabello chipped in six points and Martinez, West and Jeremiah Trevino each finsihed with four points. McNeese added three points and Garcia finished with two points.

For Olton, they were led by Chris Urbina, who finished with 16 points and was one-of-four Mustangs in double-figures scoring. Soliz netted 15 points, while Huguley added 11 points and Santillan finished with 10 points.

Martinez tallied nine points, while Canchola and Casares each added six points and Munoz finished with three points in the contest.

Both team will be in the Wildcat Classic starting Monday, Dec. 27 th . Olton will play Dumas at 2 p.m. on Monday, while the host team Littlefield will play Lockney at 8 p.m.
