Medical students from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock and various departments at TTUHSC School of Medicine have partnered with the West Texas Area Health Education Center to develop a mentors program between current medical students and high school students interested in medicine from rural areas. The program also builds a potential pathway for the students to one day build a practice in their home rural area.

According to the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center website, “Selected mentees are paired with a TTUHSC student for the three months. Mentees receive privileged access to see what it is like to be a student in a health professions program, including attending courses, seminars, lectures, programs, and educational experiences usually only available to TTUHSC students.”

Two Amherst ISD High School students were chosen to participate in the program this year. Junior, Keeiona Shed and Senior, Andres Lucas-Martinez will be mentored by current medical students, Joey Almaguer and Rahaul Atodaria. Their coordinator is Teja Pati.

This program is an effective way for current medical students to share their experiences and pathways toward successful entry into medical school, and in doing so, perhaps bring along a future colleague into their chosen profession.
