HORNETS RUN AWAY FROM BULLDOGS FOR, 53-26 WIN

The Sudan Hornets’ varsity basketball team overcame a slow start to take down the Amherst Bulldogs on Tuesday night, 53- 26.

Amherst’s Gabriel Garcia opened the contest with a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Sal Juarez. He converted the free throw to put the Bulldogs up, 3-0, to begin the contest. Brayan Torres followed it up with a steal for a fast-break lay-up to extend their lead to, 5-0, but on the next play, Juarez picked up a steal and took it to the hoop for a fast-break lay-up to get Sudan on the board, trimming the lead to, 5-2, with just over six minutes remaining in the opening quarter.

Isaac Herrera buried a three for Amherst from the right elbow and on their next trip down the floor, Jose Flores tipped an offensive rebound out to Garcia, who drained a three from the top of the key, to stretch the Amherst lead to, 11-2, with 1:28 remaining in the first quarter.

Kaleb Robinson dropped in a lay-up on the left side for Sudan to close out the first quarter with the Bulldogs in front, 11-4.

The Hornets came out buzzing in the second frame, as Jordie Bellar dropped in a lay-up and Josue Cervera drained a floater in the lane to cut the lead to, 11-8. With 5:49 remaining in the first half, Michael Limon knocked down a free-throw line jumper to make it a one-point game, as Amherst took a time out to talk things over with 5:48 remaining in the half.

Out of the break, Herrera was fouled on an attempt by Juarez; he made one-of-two shots at the line, but on the other end Michael Limon buried a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Anthony Rodriguez, giving the Hornets their first lead of the game, 13-12. With 3:33 to play in the half, Anthony Rodriguez was fouled on an attempt by Ivan Torres. He split the free throws, making the score, 14-12.

Michael Limon followed it up with back-to-back threes from the wings to push their lead out to, 20-12, and Trent Wilson picked up a steal in their own end, getting it to Michael Limon, who was fouled on an attempt, earning a trip to the line. He missed the first shot, but made the second to extend their lead to, 21-12.

With under one minute remaining in the half, Michael Limon knocked down a turnaround jumper from the right elbow, but on the other end, Herrera was fouled on an attempt by Bellar. He made one-of-two shots at the line to make the score, 23-13, with Sudan in front going into the locker rooms at halftime.

Michael Limon opened the second half with a three from the top of the key off of the assist from Anthony Rodriguez, stretching the lead to, 26-13. Anthony Rodriguez followed it up with a three of his own from the right elbow and Michael Limon kept the scoring barrage going with a putback off of his own miss, stretching their lead to, 31-13, with 6:44 remaining in the third quarter.

Amherst took a time out with 6:11 to play in the quarter and out of the break, Juarez was fouled on an attempt by Brayan Torres. He converted both free throws to extend their lead to, 33-13. However, on the other end, Herrera was fouled on an attempt by Bellar, earning a trip to the line. He split the free throws, making the score, 33-14.

Michael Limon dished a no-look pass across the lane to Bellar for a lay-up off of a steal, as Bellar drew an and-one foul on Juan Salas Jr. He converted the free throw to finish off the three-point play, making the score, 36-14, with 5:25 left to play. Herrera split a pair of free throws for the Bulldogs and on the other Michael Limon knocked down a pair to make the score, 38- 15, with 4:15 remaining in the quarter.

Herrera hit Flores in transition for a lay-up, as Sudan took a time out with 3:45 left to play in the quarter. Out of the break, Cervera stole the inbound pass from Ivan Torres and dropped it in for an easy lay-up, making the score, 40-17. With 2:45 to play in the third, Michael Limon stole the inbound pass on the sideline play and took it to the hole for a quick reverse lay-up to extend their lead to, 42- 17.

The score would stand as they entered the fourth quarter with Sudan in front, 42-17.

Anthony Rodriguez dropped in a lay-up off of the assist fro Antonio Limon, but on the other end, Salas Jr. was fouled on an attempt by Cervera, earning a trip to the line. He converted one-out-of-two shots at the line, making the score, 44-18. With just under six Brayan Torres drove the lane and kicked it out to Garcia, who buried a three from the left wing to cut the lead to, 44-21, but on the other end, Robinson scored a put-back off of a miss by Bellar, stretching their lead back out to, 46-21.

Juarez dropped in a lay-up through contact and Vargas was fouled on a three-point attempt by Salas Jr. He made two-of-three shots at the line and then followed it up with a three from the left elbow, making the score, 53-21, with 2:46 left to play in the game. Garcia dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Wilson; he sank the free throw and then closed out the game with a lay-up off of a steal by Brayan Torres, as the Bulldogs fell to the Hornets on the road, 53-26.

Michael Limon led all scorers with 23 points, while Juarez and Anthony Rodriguez each tallied six points and Bellar and Vargas each finished with five points. Cervera and Robinson each added four points in the contest.

For Amherst, they were led by Garcia, who finished with 14 points, while Herrera chipped in seven points and Brayan Torres and Flores each finished with two points. Salas Jr. added one point in the contest.

The Hornets return to the court on Tuesday when they travel to Borden County.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
