Sam Castillo wins week 9 of Football Contest

Week nine of the Lamb County Leader-News Football team is in the books, sending us into our final two weeks of the contest.

This week’s winner, with a mark of, 15-5, was Sam Castillo.

There were five contestants, who finished tied for second with a mark of 14-6 this week: Erlinda Brake, Jim Davis Sr., Marcus Garcia, Mark Grace and Devin Garcia.

By way of the tie-breaker, which was the combined score from the Lions vs the Rams, which was 47 points, Marcus Garcia took second place with a guess of 48 points and Davis Sr. and Grace tied for third, each guessing 51 points.

In the high school ranks, The Roosevelt Eagles pulled off a stunner over Abernathy, 58-56, while Sanford-Fritch took down Olton, 53-46. Amherst 45’ed Cotton Center, 54-7, while Springlake-Earth ran away from Petersburg in the second half, 92-43.

New Deal shutout Tahoka, 49- 0, while Sudan picked up their first win of the season in overtime on Friday at Ropes, 18-12. Dumas shutout Hereford, 45-0, while Tascosa handled Monterey, 60-18. Sundown blasted Hale Center, 42- 6, while Idalou throttled Stanton, 41-6.

In the college ranks, Kansas State rallied back to take down Texas Tech, 25-24, while Texas A&M took down South Carolina, 44-14. Wisconsin knocked off Purdue, 30-13, while Florida State blasted UMASS, 59-3, and Ole Miss downed LSU, 31-17.

In the NFL, The Raiders took down the Eagles, 33-23, while The Titans blasted the Chiefs, 27-3, and The Giants gave it to the Panthers, 25-3. The Bengals took over first place in their division with a, 41-17, victory over the Ravens and the Buccaneers handled the Bears, 38-3.

Those who finished 13-7 this week were, Brenda Herrell, Ivan Estrada, Jan Smith, Kay Cloninger, Lonnie Neinast, Lyndel Evans, Martin Duran, Martin Duran Jr., Oscar Sanchez and Stevey Smith. Contestants finishing 12-8 this week included, Bobby Cunningham, Dewayne Hayes, Floyce Pierce, Jim Davis Jr., JR Herrell, Larry Ashley, Britney Garcia, Richard Orozco, Terrill Moorhead, Thomas Blackstone and Tommy Cloninger.

Those who finished 11-9 this week were, Alma Castillo, Ed Dabrowski, Lacretia Garcia, Haylee Casas, Jesusa Garcia, Johnny Rosemond, Marcelino Castillo, Marcelino Garcia Jr., Robin Elliott and Teresa Dabrowski, while Amanda Barrera finished 10-10 this week.

In the overall standings, Estrada and Sanchez are tied for the top spot, each with 130 points. Lonnie Neinast, Evans and Tommy Cloninger are chasing close behind, tied for second with 129 points, while Kay Cloninger is in third place with 128 points.

Grace is in fourth place with 127 points, while Garcia Jr. sits in fifth place with 126 points. Moorhead is alone in sixth with 124 points, while Rosemond is in seventh with 123 points and JR Herrell is in eighth with 122 points. Davis Jr. is in ninth with 121 points and rounding out the top 10 are Devin Garcia, Jan Smith and Hayes tied with 120 points.
