Services for Vondee Mears, 86, were held Saturday, October 23, 2021 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Hillcrest Funeral Home with internment in Littlefield Memorial Cemetery.

Vondee Mears entered the gates of heaven early Wednesday, October 20, 2021. Born on May 2, 1935 in Meadow, Texas to George and Vera Hardin her parents were killed in a drunk driving accident while traveling to Brownfield, leaving Vondee and her four brothers. She was adopted by her great aunt and uncle, Mittie and Jim Fowlkes, in January 1937 and moved to Littlefield, Texas, where she remained for the rest of her life.

Vondee led a long and loving life. She graduated from Littlefield High School in January, 1953 and married her life long sweetheart, Melvin Mears, on February 20, 1953. Melvin and Vondee farmed in the Littlefield area until their retirement in 1994. She drove tractors, and helped Melvin work in the fields, all while raising their four children. She was a member of First Baptist Church and her favorite scriptures were Philippines 2: 9-11 and 2 Timothy 1:12.

Vondee is survived by her husband of 69 years, Melvin, her four children and their spouses, Danny and Debbe Mears of Littlefield, Vickie and Mark Driskell of Ruidoso, Loretta and Alan Armistead of Uvalde, and Paula and Randy Willis of Whiteface. Grandchildren and spouses surviving include Cynthia and Steven Aguirre, Justin and April Benton, Kyla and Will Whitworth, Charlotte and Curtis Miller, Megan and Matthew Jephcott, Michael and Julie Wood, Andrea and Phil Noreen, Sarah and Tyler Martin, Derek Howard, and Quentin Driskell. She is survived by 28 great grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter.

Greeting her in heaven were both sets of parents and her four brothers, Lum Hardin, Slim Hardin, Gene Luttrell, Joe Luttrell, and sisters, Juanita Hardin and Cherrie Hardin. Welcoming her with open arms were grandson Cory Benton, granddaughter Lisa Howard and great grandson Robert Wood.

Memorials may be made to the Cory Benton and Lisa Howard Scholarship fund at First United Bank, Littlefield EMS, Legacy of Love, Buckner’s Children’s Home of Lubbock, or Children’s Miracle Network.

Arrangements were under the personal care of Hillcrest Funeral Home in Littlefield.
