The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team picked up their first win of the season on Friday, as they traveled to Ropes and took down the Eagles in overtime, 18- 12.
With the win, the Hornets improve to 1-7 overall, 1-1 in district play.
In the first quarter, Ropes quarterback, Garrett Gilliam, threw a 25- yard touchdown pass to put the Eagles in front, 6-0, after the failed two-point conversion. They would tack on another score later in the quarter, as Zach Trull rushed for a one-yard score, making the score, 12-0, after they again were not able to convert the twopoint conversion.
Sudan would get on the board before the end of the quarter, as Kaleb Robinson caught a 63-yard touchdown pass from Trent Wilson to trim the lead to, 12-6, heading into quarter number two.
In the second quarter, junior, Josue Cervera, rushed for a 19- yard touchdown to tie the game, 12-12. The score stood going into the locker room at halftime and neither team was able to push a score across in the second half, as they headed to overtime.
In the extra period, Cervera would score on a five-yard touch down run to put the Hornets in front, 18-12, as they took down the Eagles on the road.
Wilson finished the game threeof-11 passing for 91 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, while adding 19 carries for 39 yards.
Cervera led the rushing attack for the Hornets, carrying the ball 20 times for 150 yards and two touchdowns.
In the receiving game, Robinson had one catch for 63 yards and a score, while Sal Juarez finished with one catch for 19 yards and Michael Limon added one catch for nine yards.
Defensively, Juarez had two interceptions to go along with nine total tackles, while Cervera added one interception and 14 total tackles and Limon chipped in one interception and three tackles.
Drew Carr tallied 14 tackles, including two for loss and Jon Conley added a fumble recovery to go along with nine tackles, three for loss. Jaden Conley chipped in a block and nine tackles Gabriel Cisneros had five tackles, one for loss.
The Hornets will host Smyer on Friday as District play continues.
Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
