Aug. 22, 1934 ~ Sept. 27, 2021
Orville Hill, 87, of Sudan, passed away Monday, Sept. 27, 2021 at home. He was born Aug. 22, 1934 in Sudan, Texas to Jack Yelton Hill and Lerma (Groom) Hill.
Orville married Dorothy Barber Feb. 9, 1962 in Sudan. The couple were affectionately known as "Grumpy" and "Grandy" by their grandchildren, and their whole community. Orville dedicated 57 years of his life to serving Sudan and the surrounding area as a Fireman with the Sudan Fire Department, and I9 of those years he served as Fire Chief. He was active with the department until August of this year. He loved helping his fellow firemen any way that he could, and he referred to them as " his boys".
He was a mechanic by trade, but he had many other talents. He could select the sweetest and best cantaloupe and watermelon, and he loved picking gardens, which he generously shared with everyone in town. Orville could also put an edge on a knife. He made sure to keep all his pocket knives sharp, and those of everyone around him. He also saw to it that all his family knew the importance of a good sharp knife and a handy pair of pliers. Orville spent many years splitting firewood not only for himself and his family, but for those in town.
In his younger years he also proudly served his Country as a member of the United States Anny. When he wasn't putting out fires, problem solving and fixing things, or making sure everyone was stocked with wood for the winter, Orville enjoyed hunting, fishing and shooting guns, and that's a passion he passed down to several generations of his family. He had a true servants heart and made a difference in the lives of so many in his country, his community and the area.
Orville is survived by a son, Mike Hill and wife, Patty of Sudan; a daughter, Debbie Ogerly and husband, Kerry of Lubbock; four grandchildren, Brandon Hill and wife, Kara, Laci Hill, Lindsay Richard and husband, Shaun, and Cooper Ogerly; four great-grandsons, John Michael Hill, Hunter Dwyer, Wesson Dwyer and Bowen Deane Hill; two sisters, Wanda Whitten of Amherst and Lynette Burns of Sudan; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, many friends and his brothers of the Sudan Fire Department.
Services were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 30, 2021 at First Baptist Church in Sudan with Pastor Tracy Spencer officiating and Pastor Mike Woods and Billy Tiller assisting. Arrangements were under the personal care of Hillcrest Funeral Home in Littlefield.
In lieu of flowers the family strongly encourages donations be made in Orville's honor to the Sudan Fire Department and EMS.
