Springlake-Earth falls short against Rankin, 44-34

The Springlake-Earth Wolverines’ varsity football team suffered their first loss of the season against #5 Rankin on Friday, 44-34

Ẇith the loss, the Wolverines fall to 1-1 overall on the season.

Rankin took a, 20-0, lead in the second quarter, before Springlake-Earth dropped them for a safety to get on the board, trimming the lead to, 20-2. they followed it up with a 28-yard touchdown pass, as Braxton Ethridge connected with Trace Goodman for the score. The kick after was good, cutting the lead to, 20-10.

Rankin, though, would answer with a 76-yard touchdown run to extend their lead to, 26-10. Keshan Holmes would punch in a threeyard touchdown run before halftime to cut the lead to, 26-18, going into the locker room at half time.

Rankin had the lone score of the third quarter on a pick-six, pushing their lead out to, 32-18, and they opened the fourth quarter with a touchdown run, stretching the lead to, 38-18. The Wolverines had a 50-yard kick-return touchdown and a scoop and score by Ethridge to close out the game, as they fell short against Rankin, 44-34.

Ethridge was six-of-11 passing for 73 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, while Evan DeLeon was one-of-five passing for 42 yards and two interceptions.

Holmes led the rushing attack for Springlake-Earth with six carries for 39 yards and one touchdown, while Ethridge added five carries for 28 yards.

In the receiving game, Goodman had two catches for 70 yards and one touchdown, while Tim Tanaro had two catches for 20 yards and DeLeon added two catches for 15 yards.

Defensively, Roel Fuentes led the team in tackles with 15, while Derrick Rosalez added 14 tackles and Goodman finished with 10 tackles. Ethridge tallied nine tackles and a fumble return for a touchdown. The Wolverines also had two other fumble recoveries.

This week the Wolverines travel to Cowboy Corral for a Thursday night showdown with the Happy Cowboys.

Kick-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
