The Sudan Hornets’ varsity basketball team opened their season on Tuesday at home against Floydada, falling to the Whirlwinds, 60-52.
With the loss, the Hornets fall to 0-1 to the season.
Anthony Rodriguez opened the scoring for Sudan with a lay-up off of the inbound pass from Sal Juarez and junior, Michael Limon, went coast-to-coast on their next possession for a lay-up, to make it a, 4-0, scoring run for the Hornets, with just under seven minutes to play in the opening quarter.
Diaz dropped in a lay-up for the Whirlwinds to get them on the board, as Floydada took a time out with with 6:44 to play in the first quarter, trailing Sudan, 4-2. Out of the break, Castello passed the ball to Marquez, who gave it right back to him on the give-and-go, as Castello dropped in a floater in the lane to tie the game, 4-4.
Michael Limon answered with a three for Sudan, but on the other end, Trevino was fouled on an attempt by Josh Cervera, earning a trip to the line with 4:41 to play in the quarter. He split the free throws to make it a one-possession game, 7-5. Brimington drove the left side for a floater and the Whirlwinds followed it up with back-to-back buckets from Diaz and Perez to take the lead, 11-7.
With 3:18 remaining in the quarter, Michael Limon knocked down a three from the right elbow to make it a one-point game, but the Whirlwinds responded quickly, as Castello dropped in a floater in the lane to make the score, 13-10. Abram Rodriguez picked up a steal in their own end and dropped it in for a lay-up, making it a one-point game, 13-12.
On the other end, Castello was fouled on an attempt by Abram Rodriguez; he split the free throws, making the score, 14-12. Floydada would close out the quarter with back-to-back buckets by Castello and Trevino to take an, 18-12, lead into quarter number two.
Floydada opened quarter number two with a lay-up by Trevino off of the inbound pass from Diaz, stretching their lead to, 20-12. Reyes followed it up with a lay-up for the Whirlwinds, but freshman, Trent Wilson, go the Hornets on the board in the second quarter, as he dropped in a floater from the free-throw line, trimming the lead to, 22-14.
Michael Limon scored a lay-up in transition off of the assist from Wilson, and he drew an and-one foul on the play on Diaz. The free throw was no good leaving the score, 22-16, with just over five minutes to play in the first half.
Wilson dished the ball to Michael Limon for a lay-up on the two-on-one break, as the Whirlwinds took a time out to talk things over, with their lead cut to just, four points, 22-18. Out of the break, Reyes was fouled on the floor by Anthony Rodriguez, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line. He converted both free throws to make the score, 24-18.

He converted both shots to push their lead to, 26-18. Michael Limon picked up a steal and went coast-to-coast for a lay-up and Brunington drew a blocking foul on Tony Limon on the other end. He split the free throws to close out the first half with the Whirlwinds out in front, 27-20.
Abram Rodriguez opened the second half with a bucket for Sudan, but on the other end, Reyes was fouled on an attempt by Anthony Rodriguez, who picked up his fourth foul of the game. Reyes split the free throws and two plays later, Jayden Conley hit Michael Limon for a lay-up to trim the lead to, 28-24, with just over six minutes to play in the third quarter.
Floydada answered with a bucket, but the Hornets responded, as Juarez took the ball strong to the hole for a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Trevino. The free throw was no good, leaving the score, 30-26. Trevino converted a pair of free throws on the other end for the Whirlwinds and on the next play, Diaz was fouled on an attempt by Cervera. He made good on both free throws to extend their lead to, 34-26. Marquez followed it up with a lay-up, as the Hornets called for a time out to talk things over with 3:40 to play in the third quarter.
Out of the break, Conley dropped in a lay-up off of the inbound pass, but Trevino answered with a three from the left elbow for Floydada, making the score, 39-28, with 3:19 to play in the quarter. Perez drove to the basket on the next play for Floydada, dumping the ball off to Cervea for a floater in the lane, stretching their lead to, 41-28.
With 2:14 to play in the quarter, Michael Limon scored a basket in transition, as the Hornets quickly called time out to talk things over. Out of the break, Diaz was fouled on an attempt by Abram Rodriguez; he split the free throws, as the Whirlwinds took a time out to talk it over, leading Sudan, 42-30.
Out of the break, Castello picked up a steal and passed it to Reyes in their own end for a lay-up. On the other end, Cervera was fouled on the floor by Perez earning a trip to the line. He split the free throws, trimming the lead to, 44-31. Juarez picked up a steal from Castello and drew a foul on the floor by Castello, earning him a one-in-one opportunity at the line. He made the first and missed the second, but Cervera was there for the put-back to cut the lead to, 46-34, with just under one minute to play in the quarter.
With time winding down in the quarter, Brunington knocked down a jumper from the right wing, stretching their lead back out to, 46-34, as the third quarter came to a close.
Juarez was fouled on an attempt by Brunington to open the final frame; he split the free throws, cutting the lead to 11 points, 46-35. Michael Limon was fouled on their next possession, but Castello; he missed both free throws, but Cervera was there for the put-back to cut the lead to single-digits, 46-37.
Michael Limon was fouled again on a put-back attempt by Trevino; he split the free throws to make the score, 46-38, but the Whirlwinds answered to stop the run, as Castello banked in a floater in the lane to make it a 10-point game, 48-38, with just under six minutes remaining.
After a Floydada time out with 5:17 to play, Juarez grabbed a defensive rebound and went coast-to-coast for a lay-up, making the score, 48-40. Perez answered for Floydada with a floater in the lane and on the next play, Perez was fouled on the floor by Juarez, who picked up his fourth foul, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line. He split the free throws making the score, 51-40.
Juarez scored a put-back off of the miss by Cervera and on their next possession, Juarez picked up a steal and took it the other way for a fast-break lay-up, cutting the lead to, 51-44, with 2:48 remaining. Abram Rodriguez hit Michael Limon with the outlet pass that led to a fast-break lay-up to trim the lead to five points, 51-46.
Sudan took a time out with 2:19 to play, and out of the break, Diaz was fouled on the floor by Wilson. He made one out of two at the line to extend the lead to, 52-46. Cervea took a charge on Michael Limon and the Whirlwinds capitalized on the turnover, as Castello was fouled on the floor by Juarez, who headed to the bench with his fifth foul. He split the free throws making it a sevenpoint game, 53-46.
Castello came away with a steal in the halfcourt from Wilson and took it to the hoop for a lay-up and followed it up with another lay-up on their next possession to push the lead to double-digits, 57- 46. Michael Limon went coast-to-coast for a lay-up, as the Hornets called time out with just under one minute remaining.
Out of the break, Castello split a pair of free throws, but Abram Rodriguez answered with a lay-up off ofthe assist from Wilson, making the score, 58-52. Perez knocked down a pair of five throws for Floydada to close out the contest, 60-52.
Michael Limon led the team in scoring with 25 points, while Juarez chipped in eight points and Abram Rodriguez contributed six points. Cervera added five points, while Anthony Rodriguez tallied four points and Wilson and Conley each finished with two points.
The Hornets took on Borden County at Rip Griffin Center on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Dec. 5th with an away game at New Deal.
Tip-off is scheduled for 11 am.
