The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity football team won a nail-biter on the road against Dimmitt on Friday night, handing the Bobcats their first loss of the season, 21-20.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 5-1 overall heading into district play.
Littlefield totaled 341 yards of offense, including 230 rushing yards and 111 passing yards.
The Wildcats struck first in the opening quarter, as Jonas Camacho broke free for a 27-yard rushing touchdown, followed by the PAT from Jayden Barrio to put the Wildcats on top, 7-0. Littlefield would tack on another score later in the first quarter, when Daniel Rojas scored on a seven-yard run, making the score, 14-0, as the first quarter came to a close.
Dimmitt would answer in the second frame, as Diego Cortez scored on a 17yard run, followed by the PAT to cut the lead to, 147. Cortez would complete an 18-yard touchdown pass later in the quarter, followed by the PAT to tie the game, 14-14, going into the locker room at halftime.
In the third quarter, Sammy Saenz would punch in a one-yard run for a touchdown to reclaim the lead for the Wildcats, making the score, 21-14, after the PAT.
In the final quarter, Hugo Rodriguez caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Cortez, but the PAT was no good, leaving the score, 21-20. Saenz would fumble the ball at the Dimmitt 39-yard line, giving the Bobcats the ball with 4:09 to play in the contest.
Dimmitt was driving, but after a time out, on fourth and 13 from their own 48 yard line, Cortez was picked off by Nehemiah Beanes to get the ball back for the Wildcats.
Littlefield took over at their own 43 yard line. They would take a time out with 49 seconds left, facing a third and 10, Saenz took a carry, getting back to the line of scrimmage, as the clock winded down, taking the contest, 21-20.
Offensively, Saenz finished the game 11-16 passing for 111 yards, while adding 30 carries for 135 yards and one touchdown.
Camacho tallied 12 carries for 69 yards and a score, while Rojas added seven carries for 20 yards and one touchdown.
In the receiving game, Camacho tallied one catch for 45 yards, while Jayden Barrio chipped in four catches for 28 yards and Jacob Fuentes added three catches for 23 yards. Eddie Gomez also tallied one catch for 13 yards.
