The Lamb County Leader- News’ annual Football Contest is officially underway with week one of the High School and College Football seasons in the books.
There were 33 contestants in the first contest, which saw 10 contestants tie for first place with a mark of 14-6. David Neinast, Steve Raney and Sam Castillo, Dewayne Hayes, Johnny Rosemond, Larry Ashley, Lonnie Neinast, Thomas Blackstone, JC Orozco and Richard Orozco.
The tie-breaker this week was the combined score of Tascosa and Permian, which was 45 points.
Blackstone, Rosemond, and Richard Orozco, will split the winnings evenly this week, all guessing 45 points on the tie-breaker, edging out Hayes, who guessed 48 points, Ashley, who guessed 38 points, Lonnie Neinast, who guessed 50 points, David Neinast, who guessed 57 points, J.C. Orozco who guessed 47 points, Sam Castillo, who guessed 42 points, and Raney, who guessed 60 points.
In the high school ranks, Littlefield torched Lamesa, 60-6, while Olton shutout Roosevelt, 400, while Sudan lost their opener to Texico, 27-0. Springlake-Earth won an overtime thriller over Petersburg, 31-25, while Wellman-Union defeated Amherst, 58-0, and Anton took down Southland, 5028.
Wall defeated West Plains, 42-35, while West Texas took down Tulia, 49-26, and Seminole defeated Bushland, 62-42. Lockney throttled Smyer, 62-0, while Denver City held off Abernathy, 4944, and Slaton took down New Home, 35-15.
In the College ranks, Memphis won their opener over UNLV, 27-21, while Florida State defended their home field against New Mexico State, 34-17, and Stanford took down Hawai’i, 37-27, in their opener.
Eastern Michigan took down Sacramento State, 28-17, while North Dakota State took it to Jacksonville State, 33-7, and Virginia blasted NC State, 34-8. USC took down San Jose State, 42-26, and North Carolina went over seas and took down TCU in Ireland, 15-10.
Individual results are as follows: Those who finished 13-7 this week were, Brenda Herrell, Donna Neinast, Dwight Lewallen, Jan Smith, John Hernandez, JR Herrell, Mark Grace, Moe Castillo, Stetson, Stevy Smith and Micky Orozco, while Ed Dabrowski, Oscar Sanchez, Juan Garza, Martin Duran Jr., Alma Castillo and Stephanie Dabrowski each finished 12-8.
Martin Duran, Robin Elliott and Tim Walker each finished 11-9, while Teresa Dabrowski and William Albus each finished 10-10, and Jimmy R. Garcia rounded out the field with a mark of 8-12.
