Melvin Mears entered the gates of Heaven early Sunday morning, November 26, 2023. He was born May 19, 1933 in New Home, Texas to Claude and Ruby Mears. Melvin was a fourth generation farmer. He began his farming career after quitting high school his junior year to help his father on the farm. He began farming on his own in 1952 and married his high school sweetheart, Vondee in February of 1953.
Melvin and Vondee farmed in the Littlefield area until their retirement in 1994. They worked side by side in the fields, all while raising their four children. Melvin believed in being a strong Christian leader for his family. The family attended Lums Chapel Baptist Church and the First Baptist Church of Littlefield. Melvin was ordained as a deacon on April 23, 1967 at Lums Chapel. In 1971 Lums Chapel closed and he moved his family to the First Baptist Church in Littlefield, where he continued to serve as a deacon until his passing. He served as a director on the boards of Lamb County Electric Coop and Lamb County Farm Bureau for many years.
A man of few words, most of the time, Melvin enjoyed fellowship with his Sunday school class, fishing buddies and farm families. His greatest hobbies were fishing and a good card game or dominoes with family and friends, (competitively).
Melvin is survived by his three daughters and their spouses, Vickie and Mark Driskell of Littlefield, Loretta and Alan Armistead of Nutrioso, Arizona, Paula and Randy Willis of Whiteface, and daughter-in-law Debbe Mears of Littlefield; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Cynthia and Steven Aguirre, Justin and April Benton, Kyla and Will Whitworth, Charlotte and Curtis Miller, Megan and Matthew Jephcott, Michael and Julie Wood, Andrea and Phil Noreen, Sarah and Tyler Martin, Derek Howard, and Quentin Driskell; twentyeight great grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.
Greeting him in Heaven were his wife, Vondee; son, Danny Mears; parents, Claude and Ruby Mears; brother, Boyd Mears; and a sister, Greta Armstrong. Welcoming him with wide open arms were grandson, Cory Benton, granddaughter, Lisa Howard and great grandson, Robert Wood.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Cory Benton and Lisa Howard Scholarship Fund at First United Bank, Littlefield EMS or Legacy of Love Hospice. Arrangements are under the personal care of Hillcrest Funeral Home in Littlefield.
