Yulanda McCarty-Harris receives Doctor of Education from UT

Yulanda “LaTrecia” McCarty-Harris, J.D., a proven and dedicated senior leader and attorney who has 21 years in the public/ private sector, including 15 years in higher education, recently received her Doctor of Education from the University of Texas at Austin.

McCarty-Harris is the first African American to graduate from the Executive Ed.D. in Higher Education Leadership Program. She is also a licensed attorney in Texas and Ohio and also received her undergraduate degree from UT-Austin and her Juris Doctorate from Southern Methodist University School of Law in Dallas, Texas.

McCarty-Harris was recently appointed as the Director of Culture, Employee Engagement and DEIB in the Texas Development Office working in Talent Development. She has served as a senior leader on three different college campuses, including her service at UT as Director of Missional Critical Initiatives in the Institute on Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault (Steve Hicks School of Social Work); Executive Director for Organizational Culture and Inclusion and Executive Director for the Office of Inclusion and Equity within the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement.

Prior to coming to UT, she spent 18 years in Ohio serving in various leadership positions.

McCarty- Harris is a proud 1985 graduate of Littlefield High. A former cheerleader, Homecoming Queen, athlete, honors student and Dunbar Scholarship winner, McCarty-Harris was also a Commencement speaker.

She is married to John Harris, an award- winning journalist, whose debut book, “From Gold Teeth to Gold Jacket: My Life in Football and Business,” highlights the career of Pro Football Hall of Famer Edgerrin James, on the great running backs of his generation. They have two sons, Myles and Langston, a daughter, Courtney Rose (Adam) Dantus, and a granddaughter, Sydney Rose Dantus. McCarty-Harris is the daughter of Retha McCarty Williams and the late Leo McCarty, Sr. and Rufus Williams. John D. McCarty is her godfather and uncle.
