Tommy Cloninger and JR Herrell tie for first place

The Lamb County Leader-News Football Contest made it through week two of High School Football Season.

The tie-breaker determined our winners again this week, which was the combined score between Brownwood and Midland Greenwood, 50 points. We had two contestants tie, both guessing within five points of the correct answer: Tommy Cloninger and JR Herrell, who will split the first and second prizes evenly. David Neinast finished third with a guess of 56 points, beating out Stevy Smith, who did not guess on the tiebreaker.

Denver City defeated the Littlefield Wildcats, 28-14, while Olton got into the win column with a, 33-6, victory over Dimmitt. Springlake-Earth 45’ed Hart, 49-0, while Amherst fell to Follett on Thursday at Claude, 54-8.

Sudan got thumped by Sundown on the road, 59-15, while Levelland defeated Snyder, 26-10, and Shallowater took down Seminole, 34-14. Dumas was victorious over Estacado, 38-13, while Idalou blasted Clyde, 40-13, and Pampa defeated Dalhart, 28-6.

Bushland throttled Hereford, 56-10, while Spearman bounced Sanford-Fritch, 48-6, and Vega shutout Boys Ranch, 49-0. Panhandle took down Gruver, 69-6, while Farwell took care of Bovina, 42-7. Muleshoe got their first win of the season, 42-6, while Abernathy hung on against Slaton, 21-13.

Friona edged out Borger, 27-21, while Floydada and Lockney was a freebie due to Lockney having to cancel. The big game that was missed by the majority of contestants was Iowa taking down Canadian, 28-21.

16-4 finishers this week include, Charlie Smith, Kay Cloninger and Lonnie Neinast, while Floyd Trevino, Ivan Estrada and Ronald Williams each finished 15-5 this week.

Bobby Cunningham, Floyce Pierce, Jay Lee, Johnny Rosemond, Marcus Garcia, Mark Grace, Martin Duran, Robin Elliott, Sam Castillo, Terrill Moorhead and Thomas Blackstone each finished 14-6 this week, while Alma Castillo, Dewayne Hayes, Donna Neinast, Jan Smith and Nancy Smith each finished 13-7.

Those who finished 12-8 this week are Jimmy Davis Jr., Junior Garcia, Larry Ashley, Lucas Casas, Lyndel Evans and Missy Cunningham, while Devin Garcia, Evan Barrera, Jimmy Davis Sr. and Minnie Trevino each finished 11-9.

In the overall standings, David Neinast, Herrell and Lonnie Neinast are tied for first with 32 points, while Tommy Cloninger, Kay Cloninger and Mark Grace are tied for second with 30 points. Stevy Smith, Estrada, Blackstone, Jan Smtih and Nancy Smith are tied for third with 29 points.

In fourth place with 28 points are, Williams, Pierce, Rosemond, Marcus Garcia, Moorhead and Hayes, while Lee sits in fifth place with 27 points. Bobby Cunningham and Ashley are tied for sixth with 26 points, while Elliott, Sam Castillo, Davis Jr., and Minnie Trevino are tied for seventh with 25 points.

Floyd Trevino, Donna Neinast and Evans are tied for eighth with 24 points, while Alma Castillo, Junior Garcia, Casas, Devin Garcia, Barrera and Davis Sr. are tied for ninth with 23 points. Charlie Smith rounds out the top 10 with 16 points.
