The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team went on the road last Friday and picked up their first win of the season, as they defeated the Sundown Roughnecks, 36-20.
With the win, the Hornets improve to 1-1 overall on the year.
In the first quarter, Sundown struck first, after a big run from Jose Aleman flipped the field for the Roughnecks, setting them up with first and goal at the Sudan eight-yard line. Three plays later, Jose Aleman dove over the top of the line for the one yardscore. A low snap on the PAT allowed the Hornets to get behind the line and block the kick, leaving the score, 6-0.
The Hornets were unable to get anything going on their next possession, but their defense buckled down and forced a punt, which was shanked by the Roughnecks, giving Sudan the ball at the Sundown 35-yard line.
Runs from Brian Delgado and Kyler Edwards gave the Hornets a first down at the 20-yard line, but a false start backed them up five yards, before Haden Provence called his own number, picking up nine yards on a run up the middle. The drive would stall and faced with fourth and six, Edwards took a run up the middle seven yards and a Sudan first down to the nine-yard line.
Sudan would take the ball down to the one-yard line, before Edwards took a direct snap on second and goal, plunging ahead for the touchdown. The two-point conversion pass from Haden Provence was no good, leaving the game deadlocked, 6-6, going into quarter number two.
In the second frame, Sudan regained possession at the Sundown 49-yard line. Haden Provence kept it himself on back-to-back plays to move the chains for Sudan, giving them a first down at the Sundown 35yard line. Edwards was stuffed on a first-down run, but on the next play Brian Delgado took a carry around the left side for a big gain, down to the five-yard line to set up first and goal for the Hornets.
Edwards took a direct snap on first down, taking it through the right side for the score with 8:46 remaining in the half. Haden Provence scored on the two-point conversion run to extend their lead to, 14-6, going into the locker room at halftime.
In the third quarter, Sudan would turn the ball over on downs, as Sundown’s offense took over at their own 16-yard line. The Roughnecks would march the ball down the field, capping off the drive with an 18-yard passing touchdown. Sundown would punch in the two-point conversion to tie the game, 14-14, going into the final quarter of play.
Sundown would take the lead early in the fourth quarter, as they completed an 18yard pass for a touchdown with 11:55 to play in the game. The two-point conversion run was stopped leaving the score, 2014.
Sudan took over and was backed up in their own territory, on third down, Haden Provence took things into his own hands, taking a carry up the middle, weaving through the defense for a 64yard touchdown run with 10:17 remaining in the game. Haden Provence connected with Edwards for the twopoint conversion to give Sudan the lead, 22-20.
Sundown came up empty on their next possession, as Sudan took over at the Roughneck 40-yard line. The Hornets kept the ball on the ground early in the drive with runs from Edwards, Haden Provence and Brian Delgado giving the Hornets a fresh set of downs at the 26-yard line. Brian Delgado picked up three yards on a first down run, bu Haden Provence was stuffed on the play, making it third and nine.
Sudan got flagged for a false start, making it third and long from the 30-yard line, before Haden Provence took a carry around the right side for a 30-yard touchdown run with 3:51 to play. The two-point conversion was no good, leaving the score, 28-20.
The Hornets would force a fumble on the next kickoff, and the ball was recovered by Tomas Chacon at the Sundown 28-yard line.
Just three plays later, Sudan would put the exclamation point on the contest, as Haden Provence punched in a one-yard score followed with a two-point conversion pass to Miles Ledbetter, making the score, 36-20, as the Hornets closed out the Roughnecks on the road.
The offense was led by Haden Provence, who finished 1-6 passing for 60 yards, he also added 18 carries for 156 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Edwards tallied 17 carries for 40 yards and two scores, while Brian Delgado tallied five carries for 39 yards.
In the receiving game, Ledbetter had one catch for 60 yards.
Defensively, Brian Delgado led the team with 17 total tackles, including two for loss, while Reno Smith chipped in 13 tackles, one for loss, and one sack. Ledbetter added 11 tackles, one for loss and a fumble, while Dylan Provence contributed nine tackles, four for loss and one sack. Jacob Baker notched nine tackles, while Aiden Flores contributed seven tackles and Angel Martinez chipped in six tackles and two sacks.
