Pep Centennial Celebration set for Saturday

The Pep Centennial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 5, 2023 at the St. Philip Neri Catholic Church Hall of Pep, Texas. We are inviting everyone who has a connection to Pep. Come enjoy the day with family, friends and former classmates.

The day will begin with a 10 a.m. mass. Noon meal of hotdogs and hamburgers with all the trimmings including chips, drink and dessert for $15. Recipe Books will be for sale and pre-orders will be taken on a History Book. Silent Auction (all items are welcomed). We will have Family tree and Veteran displays At about 1 to 1:30 pm – Mosaic Presentation by Sharla Baldridge, Hockley County Judge.

During the day – Oral histories will be recorded by Tai Kreidler and Elissa Stroman Southwest Collection/ Special Collections Library, Texas Tech University.

Silent Auction – throughout the day (donated items are appreciated) Veteran Displays– We want to honor all family members (grandparents, parents, children, grandchildren) who are veterans or active-duty. 8 ½ x11 or 8x10 frame, service info under photo. Family Tree Displays (if we received your info) Pep Centennial T-shirts and Recipes Books will be for sale. Pep History Book can be preordered.

There will be some activities for children during the day.

The only form of payment accepted will be cash or check. No credit or debit.

Mosaic Presentation

Tania Moody, Levelland Main Street Manager, has attained for Pep a Mosaic which will be installed in one of the handrails on the Hockley County courthouse square. The mosaic is a buffalo (Pep’s school mascot). Between 1 and 1:30 the Mosaic will be presented to Pep by Sharla Baldridge, Hockley County Judge. Sharla is part of the Sokora family from Pep.

Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library at Texas Tech University

Elissa Stroman, PHD, Oral History Assistant Archivist and her supervisor Tai Kreider will both be attending our celebration. They will have handouts and information on their oral history program. They plan on recording those who have traveled a distantance to attend that day.

Those who are local will have an opportunity to be recorded at a later.date. The Southwest Collection has previously done oral history recordings on several Pep settlers including Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Albus, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Albus, Fr. Kevin Clarke, Annie Greener, Buddy Greener, Vallie Glumpler, Mr. and Mrs. AG Jungman and Mrs. Otto Heinrich. They have about 10 interviews that were done mostly in the 1980’s. If anyone would like to listen to these interviews, they can visit their archive.
