Mustangs take down Antelopes, 40-22

The Olton Mustangs’ varsity football team got back in the win column on Friday night, as they opened up district play with a win on the road over the Post Antelopes, 40-22. With the win, the Mustangs improve to 5-1 overall, 1-0 in district play.

The Mustangs totaled 484 yards of offense, including 345 passing yards and 139 rushing yards.

Olton running back, Christian Chancy opened the scoring for the Mustangs with a four-yard rushing touchdown, but Logan Lassiter’s PAT was no good, leaving the score, 6-0. Post answered with a 10-yard rushing touchdown and made the PAT to take a onepoint advantage into quarter number two.

Chancy found the end zone again to open the second quarter of play, this time on a 15-yard run, but Lassiter’s PAT was no good, putting the Mustangs back in front, 12-7. Post responded with a three-yard rushing touchdown and made the PAT to regain the lead, 14-12.

The Mustangs struck back, as Lassiter connected with Joel Olivas Jr. for a 73-yard touchdown pass. The PAT was no good by Lassiter, making the score, 18-14. After getting the ball back, Olton again went to the air, as Lassiter found Olivas Jr. again, this time for a 65-yard touchdown pass. Lassiter connected with Andrew Martinez on the two-point conversion to make the score, 26-14, going into the locker room at halftime.

The Mustangs turned to the ground game in the third quarter, as Chancy rushed for a 34 yard touchdown, which was followed with the PAT from Lassiter to extend their lead to, 33-14. Later in the third, Lassiter rushed for a twoyard touchdown and made the PAT to stretch their lead to, 40-14, heading into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth quarter, Post found the end zone on an 18-yard touchdown pass and made the twopoint conversion, but ultimately fell to the Mustangs, 40-22.

Lassiter finished the game 1332 passing for 345 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. He also had seven carries for 22 yards and one touchdown on the ground.

Chancy led the rushing attack with 10 carries for 90 yards and three touchdowns, while Baldo Garcia tallied 12 carries for 25 yards.

In the receiving game, Olivas Jr. led the receiving attack with eight catches for 228 yards and two touchdowns, while Eric Valencia added two catches for 57 yards and Martinez tallied one catch for 31 yards. Ozzy Rodriguez finished with one catch for 29 yards.

Defensively, the Mustangs forced four turnovers; three fumbles and one interception.

The Mustangs will be back on the road on Friday to take on the Sundown Roughnecks.

Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
