Minnie Trevino wins week three football contest

Week three of the Lamb County Leader-News Football Contest was a tight one among the top finishers, as Minnie Trevino took home first place with a perfect entry.

JR Herrell and Floyd Trevino tied for second and third, each finishing 19-1 this week. The tiebreaker was the combined score of Clarendon and Bovina, which was 44 points. This left Floyd Trevino in second place this week with a guess of 45 points, while JR Herrell finished third with a guess of 50 points.

Every contestant was given two freebies, due to Idalou vs. Brownfield and Slaton @ New Deal getting canceled.

The biggest miss for our contestants this week was Smyer taking down Floydada, 22-14. The 2A Division I State Finalists from a year ago, Post Antelopes, took down the Littlefield Wildcats, 58- 6, while Sudan fell to rival Farwell in their home-opener, 32-7.

The Springlake-Earth Wolverines suffered their first loss of the season, as they fell to Happy, 77- 30. Amherst improved to 2-1 on the season after taking down Lorenzo, 52-6, and Olton edged out Hooker, OK, 34-33.

Anton 45’ed Wellman-Union, 58-8, while Abernathy survived Sundown, 21-12. Denver City won a high-scoring contest over Seminole, 50-36, while Estacado was shutout by Canyon, 38-0. Shallowater got a scare in overtime from the Levelland Lobos, but they survived, 52-46, and Whiteface routed Southland, 61-14.

Snyder Throttled Lamesa, 40-8, while Friona got the best of Muleshoe, 27-20. Roosevelt shutout Tahoka, 46-0, while Canadian drummed Bushland, 46-19. New Home bested Plains, 20-13, while Hale Center defeated Memphis, 36-2.

18-2 finishers this week included, Brenda Herrell, Lonnie Neinast, Floyce Pierce, Marcus Garcia and Nancy Smith, while David Neinast, Tommy Cloninger, Kay Cloninger, Ivan Estrada, Mark Grace and Junior Garcia, each finished 17-3 this week.

Contestants who finished 16-4 this week were Johnny Rosemond, Terrill Moorhead, Alma Castillo, Donna Neinast, Lucas Casas, Lyndel Evans, Missy Cunningham, Devin Garcia and Kyle Jones.

Those who finished 15-5 this week were Charlie Smith, Jay Lee, Martin Duran, Dewayne Hayes, Jan Smith, Jimmy Davis Sr., and Oscar Sanchez, while Stevy Smith, Bobby Cunningham, Sam Castillo and Steve Smith each finished 14-6 this week.

Thomas Blackstone finished 13- 7, while Ronald Williams finished 12-8, and Robin Elliott, Jimmy Davis Jr., Larry Ashley, Evan Barrera, Ed Dabrowski and James Hood each finished 11-9 on the week.

In the overall standings, JR Herrell sits alone in first place with 51 points, while Lonnie Neinast is in second place with 50 points and David Neinast sits in third with 49 points.

Nancy Smith, Tommy Cloninger, Kay Cloninger and Mark Grace are tied for fourth with 47 points, while Pierce, Marcus Garcia and Estrada are tied for fifth with 46 points. Minnie Trevino sits in sixth place with 45 points, while Rosemond, Moorhead and Jan Smith are tied for seventh with 44 points.

Floyd Trevino, Hayes and Stevy Smith are tied for eighth with 43 points, while Lee and Blackstone are tied for ninth with 42 points. Junior Garcia, Donna Neinast, Evans, Bobby Cunningham and Williams round out the top 10 tied with 40 points each.
