Martin Duran wins Week 8 Football Contest

Week eight of the Lamb County Leader-News Football Contest is in the books and it was a low-scoring week for most of our contestants.

This week we had two players tie for first place with a mark of 155: Martin Duran and Marcelino Castillo and two contestants tie for third place with a mark of 14-6: Trevor Williams and Brenda Herrell.

The tie-breaker this week was the combined score of the game between the Jets and Packers, which was 37 points. Martin Duran took first place with a guess of 45 points, edging out Marcelino Castillo, who finished in second place this week with a guess of 57 points. Brenda Herrell edged out Williams for third place with a guess of 45 points, while Williams guessed 58 points.

In the high school ranks, the Littlefield Wildcats picked up their first district win over Stanton on the road on Friday, 39-7, while Sudan went on the road to take down Lockney, 38-21. Sundown defeated Olton, 49- 32, while Springlake-Earth earned a district victory over Anton, 54-6.

Bushland shut out River Road, 68-0, while New Deal took down Floydada, 42-7, and Childress blasted Tulia, 48-15. Bovina went on the road and took down Crosbyton, 63-21, while Plainview defeated Lubbock High, 62-19, and Stratford held off Panhandle, 40-35.

In the college ranks, Syracuse took down N.C. State, 24-9, while Tennessee won an epic battle over Alabama, 52-49. Oklahoma held off a late comeback from Kansas, 5242, while Kentucky took down Mississippi State, 27-17, and Stanford upset Notre Dame, 16-14.

In the NFL, The Eagles stayed unbeaten on the season taking down the division rival Cowboys, 26-17. The Colts held off the Jaguars, 34-27, while the Patriots took down the Browns, 38-15, and the Bills edged out the Chiefs, 24-20. The Seahawks picked up a win over the Cardinals, 19-9.

The rest of the scores for this week are as follows: Those who finished 13-7 this week include, JR Herrell, Gary Edwards, Tommy Cloninger and Charlie Smith, while those who finished 12-8 were David Neinast, Donna Neinast, Lonnie Neinast, Johnny Rosemond, Stevy Smith, Mark Grace and Chris Ruiz.

11-9 finishers this week were, Ivan Estrada, Dewayne Hayes, Terrill Moorhead, Devin Garcia, Larry Ashley and Sam Castillo, while Jan Smith, Marcelino Garcia Jr., Oscar Sanchez, J.C. Orozco, Richard Orozco, Teresa Dabrowski, Floyce Pierce and Martin Duran Jr., each finished 1010.

Marcus Garcia, Alma Castillo, Thomas Blackstone, Maria Pinon and Robin Elliott each finished 911 this week, while Ed Dabrowski and Jimmy Garcia each finished 812 this week.

In the overall standings, David Neinast sits in first place with 113 points, while Brenda Herrell is in second place with 112 points and Martin Duran is in third place with 111 points. JR Herrell is in fourth place with 110 points, while Donna Neinast and Jan Smith are tied for fifth with 109 points, and Lonnie Neinast and Rosemond are tied for sixth with 108 points.

Estrada is in seventh with 107 points, while Edwards and Marcelino Garcia Jr. are tied for eighth with 106 points. Hayes is in ninth place with 105 points and Stevy Smith and Sanchez round out the top 10 tied with 103 points.
