The Lamb County Leader- News’ annual Football Contest just passed the halfway mark for the season, as Week 6 is now in the books.
This week, Maria Pinon took the top spot with a mark of 17-3, while Donna Neinast placed second with a score of 15-5. We had seven contestants tie for third this week with a mark of 14-6: Dewayne Hayes, Alma Castillo, Jan Smith, Johnny Rosemond, JR Herrell, Robin Elliott, Steve Raney and Stevy Smith.
The tie-breaker this week was the combined score of the Chiefs and Raiders, which was 57 points.
Stevy Smith and Hayes tied for third place with the closest guess of 48 points, edging out Rosemond and Jan Smith, who guessed 45 points, JR Herrell, who guessed 44 points, Alma Castillo, who guessed 38 points, and Elliott, who guessed 35 points.
In the high school ranks, Littlefield edged out Dimmitt on the road, 21-20, to hand the Bobcats their first loss of the season, while Olton took down Sundown on the road, 34-14, to improve to 6-0 on the year. Wellman-Union took down Springlake-Earth, 46-22, while Anton edged out Petersburg, 50-45, and Post shutout Stanton, 370.
Friona throttled Brownfi eld, 76-16, while Richland Springs took down Whitharral, 73-50, and Amarillo defeated Tascosa, 45-20. Roosevelt edged out Abernathy, 38-32, while Perrtyton clipped Childress, 35-31.
In the College ranks, Alabama handled Mississippi State, 56-23, while SMU took down Boston College, 25-16, and Air Force slipped by Navy, 14-9. Louisiana Tech got by Army, 31-29.
In the NFL, the Colts took care of the Commanders, 30-13, while the Panthers defeated the Lions on Sunday Night Football, 32-26. The Giants took down the Cardinals, 36-24, while the Patriots edged out the Bills, 29-26, and the Packers deafeted the Buccaneers, 17-14.
Individual results are as follows: Those who finished 13-7 this week were, Mark Grace, Charlie Smith, David Neinast, JC Orozco, John Hernandez, Lonnie Neinast, Martin Duran, Micky Orozco, Oscar Sanchez, Teresa Dabrowski and Thomas Blackstone. 12-8 finishers this week were Brenda Herrell, Juan Garza, Richard Orozco, Stetson Sedberry and Tim Walker, while Jimmy Garcia, Larry Ashley and Stephanie Dabrowski each finished 11-9 this week.
Sam Castillo tallied a score of 10-10, while Ed Dabrowski and Moe Castillo rounded out the field this week with a mark of 911.
In the overall standings, Hayes and Hernandez are tied for the top spot with 88 points, while Rosemond and Lonnie Neinast are tied for second with 87 points. Jan Smith, Stevy Smith and David Neinast are tied for third with 86 points, while JR Herrell and Raney are tied for fourth with 85 points, and Donna Neinast and JC Orozco are tied for fifth with 84 points.
Blackstone is in sixth with 83 points, while Elliott, Micky Orozco and Richard Orozco are tied for seventh with 82 points, and Duran, Walker and Sam Castillo are tied for eighth with 81 points. Brenda Herrell is in ninth with 80 points and Garza and Ashley round out the top 10 with 77 points.
