Littlefield Marchin’ Cats: 35 Years of Sweepstakes!!

On April 9, the Littlefield High School Band competed at the UIL Concert and Sightreading Evaluation in Plainview at Wayland Baptist University.

The band earned 1’s in both concert and sightreading portions of the competition and received standing ovations from the audience and the judges.

Students played three pieces for the concert portion of the contest: “Them Basses,” “Fantasy on a Japanese Folksong” and “Choose Joy.”

The judges for the concert portion of the contest included Dr. Charles Trayler, Brian Tillman from Irion County High School and Bob Vetter.

Judges said the performance encompassed great moments, fantastic teaching and individually great section moments. Moreover, the band’s performances are cited as a “wonderful musical performance.”

In the sightreading portion of the contest, the director is given three minutes to study the score and seven minutes to practice the piece with the band. Then, judges evaluate the band’s performance.

For this portion of the competition, the judges were: Barbara Lambrect, Rocky Harris-Midland Greenwood and Fred Pankratz.

The judges congratulated the band’s performance, along with the band director’s leadership.

“Bravo to the band and directors. The reading was a smashing success. Tone-beautiful, well supported, rich, resonant, great pitch control,” the judges said. “It is so nice to have such strong harmony lines – impressive! Congratulations on your performance today and being taught by two master teachers.”

Littlefield’s band directors, Bonnie Anderson, Gina Muela and Kevin Kreutler, said the group prepared for the competition for several months in advance, including prompt 7:30 a.m. practices.

“We directors love these kids and have enjoyed working with them,” the directors said. “We salute this group of musicians. Congratulations on earning the last sweepstakes under this group of directors.”
