Lfd. School Board names Mike Read lone finalist for Superintendent position

The Littlefield Independent School District Board of Trustees met in regular session on Monday, Oct. 26th in the Board Room of the Jerry Blakely Administration Building of Littlefield ISD.

Board Members present included: Gary Birkelbach, Lance Broadhurst, Johnny Castillo Jr., Pat Demel, Adrian Solis and Hervey Valdez Jr., and Superintendent Robert Dillard. Guests present were Tim Gau, Bryan Gregory, Brent Green, Mike Read, Mitch McNeese, Tom Whistler and Amber Hayes.

The invocation was give by Solis and there was nobody present for public forum. The minutes from the previous meeting were approved by general consent.

Campus principals, as well as Coach Green gave reports on student enrollment, student progress, and student attendance, as well as planned special events and student performance in extracurricular events.

The Board discussed the membership and role of the district strategic planning team. No action was taken.

Each year, Littlefield ISD enters into an agreement with the South Plains Community Action Association to provide Head Start services to eligible students at Littlefield Primary School. The motion was made by Birkelbach and seconded by Solis to approve the 2021-2022 Head Start Agreement as recommended by Supt. Dillard. The motion carried.

There was no action needed for the Trust Property Disposition.

Supt. Dillard presented detailed Financial and Investment Summaries including projections for revenue and expenditures for the 2020-2021 fiscal year. The motion was made by Birkelbach and seconded by Demel to approve the Financial and Investment Review and Report as presented. The motion carried.

“With the enactment of our 1-1 technology initiative and the use of Microsoft Teams as our primary instructional tool, it has become more important than ever to have substitute teachers that have a working knowledge of our systems so they can effectively instruct our students in the event that teachers must miss.” To that end, Supt. Dillard recommended the hiring of four at-will staff members as full-time substitute teachers.

The motion was made by Birkelbach and seconded by Solis to hire four at-will staff members as full-time substitute teachers, as recommended by Supt. Dillard. The motion carried.

The Board moved into Executive Session at 8:30 p.m. where Superintendent Candidate Mike Read was interviewed. The Board returned to Regular Session at 10:14 p.m. where a motion was made by Birkelbach and seconded by Castillo to name Mike Read the lone finalist for the Littlefield ISD Superintendent Position. The motion carried.

The Board discussed training information and the meeting was adjourned by Board Preisdent Broadhurst at 10:17 p.m.
