Lady Cats rally past Lamesa, 11-6

The Littlefield Lady Cats picked up a huge district win last Saturday at home, where they topped the Lamesa Lady Tornadoes, 116.

With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 13-5 overeall, 4-3 in district play.

Emiliana Contreras had a double fall in front of Myli Hernandez in center field to lead things off for Lamesa, and Melanie Peretez hit a grounder to Bryndle Ray at shortstop, who made the throw to first, but it was dropped by Lyric Rios, as Contreras took third on a delayed steal, putting runners on the corners.

Emily Capetillo knocked an RBI double into center field to put the Lady Tornadoes up, 1- 0, but Natalia Sanchez got Zoey Sifuentes to fly out to Cali Saldana in right-center field for out number one and she got Liliana Contreras to strike out swinging for out number two.

Kaylee Hernandez hit an RBIdouble into left- center field, stretching the lead to, 2-0, before Sanchez got Lexi Hernandez to strike out swinging to retire the side.

The Lady Cats were kept quiet in the top of the first, but they were able to bounce back defensively to begin the second inning, as they got Lamesa to go three-up-andthree- down. Sanchez got Chrisalynn Uresti to strike out looking and got Kale Campos to strike out swinging for out number two. Emiliana Contreras would fly out to Saldana in center field to retire the side.

After a scorless bottom of the second for the Lady Cats, the Lady Tornadoes came up in the top of the third, starting things off with back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases. Liliana Contreras struck out swinging for out number one, but Kaylee Hernandez drew an RBI walk to push their lead to, 3-0.

Lexi Hernandez flew out to Alyssa Torres in left field for out number two, but Sanchez ripped a two-RBI double to left-center field, extending their lead to, 5- 0. Sanchez would be tagged out between second and third by Ray on the next play to retire the side.

Brinley Acevedo drew a lead off walk in the bottom of the third inning to give the Lady Cats a base runner. Ray hit into a fielder’s choice to Lexi Hernandez at third, but a bad throw to second landed Acevedo on third and Ray on second with no outs. Torres drove in a run with a single to left-center field to make the score, 5-1, and Taryn Golden had a pop up fall in front of second base, as Ray scored, Torres advanced to third and Golden made it to second, trimming the lead to, 5-2.

Sanchez hit an RBI-single to right field to cut the lead to, 5-3, as Taylin Gomez came on as the courtesy runner, and Brianna Aleman hit a sacrifice to second base for a double play, as another run scored, slicing the lead to, 5-4. Rios doubled to left field and Hernandez drew a walk, as Rios took third on the play. Saldana drew a walk to load the bases, but Acevedo struck out swinging to end the inning.

The Lady Cats recorded two quick outs in the top of the fourth inning, as Emiliana Contreras flew out to Saldana in right-center field and Peretez flew out to Saldana in center field. The Lady Cats would load the bases for Lamesa, but they would not allow a run to score, as they got Kaylee Hernandez to hit into a fielder’s choice to Aleman at third, who stepped on her own base for the out to retire the side. Both teams went scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, with Rios led things off with a double to leftcenter field. Hernandez singled on an error by Sifuentes at shortstop and Saldana singled on a drop by Kenzie Armendariz in left field, tying the game, 5-5. Acevedo struck out swinging for out number one, but Ray ripped an RBI-double into right-center field, putting the Lady Cats in front, 6-5.

Torres drew a walk to load the bases for Littlefield and Golden followed it up with a two-RBI single through the right side, leaving Torres on third with the score stretched to, 8-5.

Capetillo relieved Liliana Contreras in the circle for Lamesa, as Sanchez popped up to shortstop, but the ball fell in for a double, as Torres scored on a delay and Golden took third on a throw home past the catcher, making the score, 9-5. Aleman kept the rally going with a two-RBI double down the third-base line, stretching the lead to, 11-5.

Rios lined out to Sifuentes at shortstop, but the throw to second was missed by Peretez, allowing Aleman to take third with two outs. Hernandez would ground out to Lexi Hernandez at third to end the inning.

The Lady Tornadoes would scratch one run across in the top of the seventh, but the Lady Cats were able to slam the door on them, pulling out the big home-district victory, 11-6.

Sanchez pitched a complete game for the Lady Cats, throwing seven innings. She gave up 10 hits, three walks and six runs, one earned, while earning seven strikeouts.
