Veronica Savala gave her 10th grade Spanish class a project for Dia De Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, where each student has to honor someone in their family who has passed away.

Dia De Los Muertos is a holiday, often observed in Mexico, that is celebrated Nov. 1st through Nov. 2nd. The holiday is a time of prayer and remembrance where friends and family gather together to pay respects and remember their loved ones that have passed away.

Kali Cornette, a student of Savala’s, decided to honor her great-grandfather, Henry Sosa, for her project.

“I picked him because he was always a big part of my childhood,” Cornette said. “He was always there for anything that I needed and he would support me through any decision that I made.”

Cornette said she talked about his love for the outdoors and his family in her project. “I talked about him and then his love for being outdoors, going camping with his family and his kids and him watching football,” she said.

Cornette said it took her two days to finish her poster. “Me and my mom are very creative people and she helped me kind of come up with the idea to do that and then we came up with the alter part and then after that everything just kind of closed,” she said.

Cornette said Dia De Los Muertos was never a big holiday for her, but she is going to continue to celebrate it with her family.

“It was never really a big holiday for me, but after that assignment it became more important to me and then me and my family celebrated it this year, because of the assignment and then that showed my family a lot and then I got to learn about a lot of family members that I didn’t know I had,” she said.
