JR Herrell wins week six football contest

Week six of the Lamb County Leader-News Football Contest is in the books and we are officially halfway through our football contest this year.

This week’s top winner was JR Herrell, who finished with a mark of 17-3. We had three contestants tie for second place with a mark of 15-5: Brenda Herrell, Charlie Smith and Mark Grace.

The tie-breaker this week was the combined score of the game between the Kress and Whiteface; 108 points. Brenda Herrell edged out the competition with a guess of 85 points to claim second place and Charlie Smith took third place with a guess of 70 points.

In the high school ranks, Olton’s comeback efforts on the road against Vega came up short, as they fell, 21-13, for their first loss of the year. Seminole throttled Big Spring, 63-28, while Canadian blasted Randall, 56-21, and Pampa edged out Borger, 43-40.

Hart took down Anton, 58-32, while Amherst went on the road to take down Claude, 49-28, and Muleshoe handed the Brownfield Cubs their first loss of the year, 39-37. Dalhart defeated Levelland, 33-24, and Lubbock-Cooper edged out Coronado, 15-14. Lorenzo won via a Dawson forfeit.

In the college ranks, Alabama ran through Arkansas, 49-26, while Clemson downed North Carolina State, 30-20, and Oklahoma State took care of Baylor, 36-25. Wake Forest defeated Florida State, 3121, and Ole Miss upset Kentucky, 22-19.

In the NFL, The Saints fell short against the Vikings in London, 2825, while Dallas took down Washington, 25-10, and the Jets went on the road and beat the Steelers, 24-20. the Chiefs defeated the Buccaneers, 41-31, and the Falcons edged out the Browns, 23-20.

The rest of the scores for this week are as follows: Those who finished 14-6 this week were Lonnie Neinast, Thomas Blackstone, David Neinast, Martin Duran, Alma Castillo, Johnny Rosemond, Gary Edwards and Trevor Williams. 13-7 finishers this week included Marcelino Garcia Jr., Stevy Smith, Dewayne Hayes, Ed Dabrowski and Oscar Sanchez, while those who finished 12-8 were Donna Neinast, Ivan Estrada, Maria Pinon, Devin Garcia and Robin Elliott.

Jan Smith, Ronnie Martin, Terrill Moorhead, Chris Ruiz, J. C. Orozco, Tommy Cloninger and Marcelino Castillo each finished 11-9, while Richard Orozco, Floyce Pierce and Larry Ashley each finished 10-10 and Marcus Garcia, Jimmy Garcia Teresa Dabrowski and Sam Castillo each finished 911.

In the overall standings, David Neinast sits alone at the top with 84 points, but hot on his trail is Garcia Jr., with 83 points in second place and JR Herrell in third place with 82 points. Brenda Herrell, Duran and Jan Smith are tied for fourth with 81 points, while Lonnie Neinast, Rosemond and Edwards are tied for fifth with 80 points.

Donna Neinast is in sixth with 79 points, while Hayes and Estrada are in seventh with 78 points and Sanchez is in eighth with 77 points. Stevy Smith, Devin Garcia and J.C. Orozco are tied for ninth with 75 points and Martin and Marcus Garcia round out the top 10 with 74 points.
