JAN SMITH WINS WEEK TWO OF THE FOOTBALL CONTEST

The Lamb County Leader-News Football Contest wrapped up its second week this past weekend, with 10 high school games and 10 collegiate football games.

Jan Smith was the first place winner this week with a score of 17-3, followed in second place by Oscar Sanchez, who finished 16-4. Marcelino Garcia Jr., Brenda Herrell and Terrill Moorhead all finished 15-5 this week, forcing us to go to the tie-breaker to determine our third-place winner. The tiebreaker this week came from the college ranks and was the combined score between Grambling and Arkansas State; 61 points. Marcelino Garcia Jr. edged out Brenda Herrell and Moorhead with a guess of 55 points to take third place this week.

Littlefield picked up a big win on the road on Friday, taking down Denver City, 33-14, while Sudan picked up their first win on the road at Tahoka, 36-12. Springlake-Earth went on the road and shutout Valley, 69-0, while Amherst defeated Groom, 64-27.

White Deer took down Anton at home, 66-14, while Olton improved to 2-0 on the season with a, 47-16, victory over Dimmitt. Idalou edged out New Deal, 14-9, while Abernathy blasted Slaton, 48- 8, and Dumas took down Estacado, 34- 7. Muleshoe rounded out the high school slate of games with a, 41-14, victory over Lamesa.

In the college ranks, Ohio State pulled away late in their seasonopener to take down Notre Dame, 21-10, while Georgia routed Oregon, 49- 3, and Arkansas outlasted Cincinnati, 31- 24. Florida pulled out the upset over Utah, 29-26, while Florida State won a stunner over LSU, 24-23, on a blocked extra point.

Texas Tech handled Murray State, 63-10, while Oregon State took down Boise State, 34-17, and Western Kentucky defeated Hawaii, 49-17. Bye blasted South Florida, 50-21, while Arizona took down San Diego State, 38-20.

The individual standings are as follows: Those who finished 14-6 this week were Dewayne Hayes, Gary Edwards, JR Herrell, Johnny Rosemond, J. C. Orozco and Tommy Cloninger, while David Neinast, Martin Duran, Devin Garcia, Stevy Smith, Teresa Dabrowski, Sam Castillo and Floyce Pierce finished 13-7 this week.

Ronnie Martin, Trevor Williams, Marcelino Castillo, Ivan Estrada, Marcus Garcia, Thomas Blackstone, Richard Orozco, Alma Castillo and Robin Elliott each finished 12-8 this week, while Lonnie Neinast, Mark Grace, Ed Dabrowski and Maria Pinon each finished 11-9.

Donna Neinast and Charlie Smith each finished 10-10 this week, while Jonas Camacho finished 9-11 and Larry Ashley and Jimmy Garcia each finished 7-13.

In the overall standings, Jan Smith leads the pack with 31 points, while Sanchez and Hayes are tied for second place with 29 points, and Edwards, JR Herrell and David Neinast are next in third place, each with 28 points. Brenda Herrell, Garcia Jr., Rosemond, Martin and Williams are tied for fourth with 27 points, while Moorhead, J.C. Orozco, Cloninger and Duran are tied for fifth with 26 points.

Devin Garcia, Stevy Smith and Marcelino Castillo are tied for sixth with 25 points, while Estrada, Lonnie Neinast, Grace and Donna Neinast are tied for seventh with 24 points. Teresa Dabrowski, Marcus Garcia and Ed Dabrowski are tied for eighth with 23 points, while Sam Castillo, Blackstone and Pinon are tied for ninth with 22 points and Richard Orozco rounds out the top 10 with 21 points.
