“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

Psalm 139:23-24 I recently had a check engine light come on in my vehicle. After a while it also said service needs to occur or I would lose power within 175 miles. That warning sent me to a mechanic who is still searching for the answer to fix my vehicle’s problem. It got me to thinking that many of us probably are going through life with a check engine light in our souls. We have so much negative junk going through our minds and our bodies that there is no wonder when we don’t begin to feel down or sluggish or lose power!

The answer to our soul’s warning is to seek a “mechanic.” In the soul’s case the “mechanic” is none other than God. In Psalm 139 David lays out just how well God knows him and (us) and then asks God to search him and test him and basically locate the anxious thoughts that are causing his soul harm, and offensive ways. To me that is symptoms of what we put in our minds and our bodies.

The good news is that a good “mechanic” will figure out what is causing the check engine light to go on most of the time, but in our case, the great “mechanic” God will be able to help us every time! He is the one that created us in our inmost being and knit us together in our mother’s womb and he knows every thought and word we have even before we make them. In other words, because He is the one that stitched us together, there is absolutely no way that we can’t find peace and healing through Him! So, now that we know where to go when the check engine light of our soul is on, the question is will we?

God is amazingly kind in that he will not intervene in your life until you ask Him in. David knowing He needed the touch of the Master’s hand, said “Search me, God.” And after that He said “lead me in the way everlasting” which shows us that if we ask God, He will show us, and then our response should be simply to walk in obedience to His guidance! Many people drive vehicles all the time with the check engine light on. I hope that you won’t do that with the check engine light of your soul!
