First United Bank retiree reflects on time, fondness for his occupation, community

Growing up, Lance Broadhurst’s family moved frequently as his father worked as a preacher in various towns.

Born in Denver, Colorado, Broadhurst lived in Hale Center, Friona and Lubbock before settling in Littlefield for his freshman year of high school in 1977.

With his 21 years of experience at First United Bank, Broadhurst said he deeply values helping others, a trait he attributes to his father.

“It’s always good when you can help somebody in our profession,” Broadhurst said. “Not just the ones that had all the money, just anybody I could help. Those are my fondest times.”

Now, after working his way up through First United Bank, Broadhurst is giving back to himself as he enters retirement.

Broadhurst serves as the Senior Vice President and Branch Manager for First United Bank. Before receiving these positions, Broadhurst worked as the Assistant Vice President for about a year and a half.

Before working at the bank, Broadhurst worked in a denim mill at American Cotton Growers for 17 years after graduating from West Texas A&M University.

In high school, Broadhurst competed in track and football. It is during this period in his life that Broadhurst said he grew fond of Littlefield.

“I thought of all the moving that I had done as a child, I kind of decided, ‘You know what, I’m just gonna set up shop and stay here,’” Broadhurst said.

Eventually, Lance Broadhurst met his wife, Shanda Broadhurst, and the couple started a family of two sons: Jordan and Hayden Broadhurst.

Recently retired, Shanda Broadhurst worked as a primary, elementary and middle school teacher in Littlefield. Now joining her in retirement, Lance Broad-hurst said he looks forward to spending more time traveling and maintaining their rental property alongside her.

“We’ve got a bucket list trying to go to all 50 states,” Lance Broadhurst said, “I think we’re about nine short, so we’ll try to make that happen.”

Compared to his existing daily routine, Lance Broadhurst will now go about his days stressfree, never needing to tend to the various tasks in his packed schedule.

“You’ve got to balance people wanting a loan but also having the priority of managing,” Lance Broadhurst said. “You have a situation of the teller line, or you have other things going on – there’s a lot of moving plates.”

Reflecting on his time with the bank, Lance Broadhurst said he aspires to continue to witness Littlefield’s growth.

Moreover, Lance Broadhurst said he wants Littlefield residents to recognize and cherish the value of the town’s closeness.

“It’s unique. It’s small, and I like that,” Lance Broadhurst said. “My encouragement is just to hang tight here. Let’s build Littlefield up and quit running off to the other communities; stay at home so that we can continue to grow.”

Broadhurst’s Retirement Party will be at First United Bank in Littlefield on Monday, December 30th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
