The City of Littlefield has plans in place to close off a block of Phelps Ave. between the Littlefield Police Department and the Lamb County Library.

“It has been a long time coming. We’ve been working on this for a couple of years now,” Mitch Grant Littlefield City Manager said. “We’ve finally got these draft plans from Parkhill and I feel like it is going to be a really good addition.”

Grant explained that they finished up the first grant, which was used to fix the drainage grades and this grant is for a lot more money.

“We are going to address what we couldn’t afford to address last time,” he stated. “There has been an ongoing conversation between us and the county for the big thing we are planning to do, which is going to be a turnaround mainly for the police department to use.”

He added, “We would be closing the section between the PD and the Library. I’ve been talking to the county and they’ve got some plans to put a park there also, with possibly a gazebo and some other things I think it would be neat, but there wouldn’t be thru traffic anymore.”

Grant explained that the biggest impact we’re going to have is down Phelps Ave.

“These existing bump outs are all busted up and cracked and beyond fixing,” he said. “So, we have plans to replace those and make them look nice. We are going to stay away from the historical stuff, such as the awnings and things like that, that people like.”

He added, “We are also going to try and address a few of the rough one-ways, mainly the one in front of First Baptist Church and LFD. I’ve got three I would like to do, but it all depends on what our bids come back like.”

Grant said that they are looking for construction on this project to begin around the beginning of 2021.

If anyone has any questions or wants to look at a set of plans, they’re welcome to come by City Hall and look at the plans.
