Amherst man dies in rollover Sunday

A Texas Department of Public Safety official investigated a onevehicle crash and rollover near Amherst that occurred at 12:05 a.m. Sunday morning, Oct. 25, 2020.

Gilberto Leal Garcia, 22-year-old male from Amherst, was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche, southbound on FM 1055, entering a curve in the roadway, which intersected with County Road 145. The posted speed limit was 55 miles per hour, and the roadway was clear and dry.

According to the DPS report, the vehicle left the roadway and went into the west barrow ditch between FM 1055 and CR 145, struck a chevron directional sign and a stop sign, before rolling several times prior to coming to rest on it’s top.

The DPS report states that Garia, was not wearing his seat belt, and was later pronounced deceased at the scene by Judge Matt Hanna.

The DPS informational officer reports that this information is from a preliminary report, and the information may change, be corrected, or added to, based on the investigator’s finding.
