Levelland Centennial Celebration taking shape for Saturday, April 11th

The City of Levelland Centennial is shaping up to be a day-long celebration of history, food, entertainment, fireworks, and fun.

The celebration, scheduled for April 11, will kick off downtown with the Centennial Parade. Parade organizers are looking for local families, churches, organizations, former mayors and city council members, veterans and more to ride in the parade.

“We want to celebrate the last 100 years as we prepare for the next 100 years,” said Mayor Breann Buxkemper.

The City of Levelland website and Facebook pages have parade entry information. The prizes for outstanding parade entries range from $250 to $750.

“We are hoping to find citizens who are 100 years old this year to serve as our Parade Marshals,” said Buxkemper. “We couldn’t think of a more special way to kick off our day of celebrating.” Interested citizens can contact City Hall at 806-894-0113.

The day will start with a parade. Then, event goers are invited to remain downtown for a free community lunch and entertainment at the Gazebo. “We are prepared to serve up hamburgers and hot dogs for the first 2,000 people in line and are so grateful for the local businesses and organizations that have agreed to cook for us that day,” said Buxkemper.

The Gazebo will be host to some great entertainment, from musical groups to dancing groups, and there will be convenient seating nearby for our more seasoned partygoers.

Studebaker Events will house local history displays from our churches and organizations. “Many of our churches and civic groups are also celebrating milestone birthdays and are invited to set up a table at Studebaker‘s to show off their history,” said Mayor Pro Tem Michael Stueart. “We will have golf cart shuttles for those who need assistance traveling from the parking areas to the fun,” said Stueart.

The downtown celebrations will wrap up around 3 p.m. and will reconvene at the Oxy Sports Complex at 6 p.m.

Food trucks and vendors will be set up in the sports complex parking lot and citizens are invited to bring chairs or a blanket, maybe even a picnic supper, and enjoy music, yard games and fireworks. Spectators will enjoy a free slice of 100th birthday cake, while supplies last.

KLVT Radio will provide music. A local vocalist will open the evening with the “Star Spangled Banner” and Renegade Wireline will produce a spectacular fireworks show at dusk.
