Following a special meeting held by the Levelland ISD Board of Trustees Wednesday evening, Kay Franklin was appointed as a new member of the board.
The meeting immediately went into an executive session following open comment in which the board members interviewed each applicant for the vacant position. Once the session was over, the board reconvened and announced their decision.
During the June regular meeting held by the board, Trustee DeEtte Edens announced her resignation from the board citing a significant change in her professional career.
A discussion was held with the remaining board regarding the process they wish to pursue to fill the vacant position. It was decided to fill the position by appointment rather than special election due to the projected cost of the election being around $10,000.
It was also mentioned that the position must be filled within 180 days. The board set July 18th as their deadline for applications.
At the time of her resignation, Edens left two years of her term on the table as full terms are three years.. With the appointment of Franklin, she will serve the second year and will have to go through the election process in the coming year and win to serve the third year. Once the third year of what would have been Edens term is concluded, the individual running for the position would secure a full three year term.
