    On May 6th, 2024, Mayor Eric Turpen declared it Retha McCarty Williams Day. A day to not only celebrate 80 years of life, but also to honor the woman who has become a staple in Littlefield for her service to the community and her faithfulness to her church, Irving Street Baptist Church.

    Over 150 family, friends and guests joined in the 80th birthday celebration at the MAC Building (First Baptist Church) hosted by her children, Randy (Connie) McCarty, Dr. Yulanda “LaTrecia” McCarty- Harris ( John), Leo McCarty, Jr. (Sharon), Shawn (Judge Dominique) Williams, and Shela (Ricky) Washington. Her grandchildren were also instrumental in the planning sponsoring the beautiful cake and the music. The event was coordinated by Events by A&J – the owners of which are her niece and nephew, Alicia and Joe Patterson and the delicious Mexican cuisine was catered by Loco’s Restaurant & Bar, a locally owned restaurant.     Retha has received numerous awards including the Littlefield Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture Woman of the Year Award in 2011. She was also named “Woman of the Year” by the LeCoterie Society, a women’s social organization in San Angelo in 1994.

    She is a dedicated volunteer in Littlefield and currently serves as a Board member of the Littlefield Economic Development Corporation and is a former board member of the Chamber, Meals on Wheels, Helping Hands, and Littlefield’s Code of Enforcement.

    Retha has also served many years as a volunteer in the elections, at the Lamb County Healthcare Center, as part of the Ladies Auxiliary, and is a longtime substitute teacher in the Littlefield Schools. She also served her community in the annual Juneteenth Celebrations, Littlefield and Dunbar Reunion and Black History Month programs.

    Retha, a graduate of Paducah High School, and has taken college courses at Paris Junior College, worked as a telephone operator at General Telephone Electric (GTE) for 29 years and retired in 1995. During her time at GTE, she also lived in San Angelo, Texas and spent five years in Paris, Texas where she met Rufus, who passed away in 2021. Her first husband, Leo McCarty, Sr., who passed away in 1995, is the nephew of John D. McCarty.
